Winter Holiday Steam sale 2015
« on: December 18, 2014, 05:44:47 pm »
So, what have you picked up so far?

so far:
Beyond Earth for some of my relatives
Flight simulator x for me

I have my eye on some RPG's, but I don't know whether or not to purchase them if they are not yet on the main page! So hard to decide. I am on vacation from work, my exam is over, I think it's time to let it loose with some good gaming sessions! Including board gaming and some ai war. Holiday vacation is the best way to end the year.

What have you picked up? Happy holidays.

Note that there are some time limited offers tied to the franchises on the daily deals that could easily be worth your time:

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance 80% off for as long as MGS5: The Demo is a daily deal. MGR:R is an excellent spectacle fighter/brawler/beat-em-up/whatever that is well worth the normal price. The discount should make it a no-brainer for anyone interested in the genre.

Civilization 5 (normal, dlc and complete!) 75% off while Civilization: Beyond Earth is a daily deal. If you only have the base CiV, the Complete edition includes both expansions and all dlc for less than what both expansions would cost alone.

I'm really picky so I might not buy anything but I'm considering few games.

I'm considering buying these:
-Dead Space 2

I'm going to do some research and then consider these games:
-Wasteland 2
-Halfway
-NEO Scavenger
-Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal
-Project Zomboid
-Distant Worlds: Universe

Games to keep an eye on:
-Pillars of Eternity
-Resident Evil HD Remaster
-Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Distant worlds is a good choice, if you can afford it. The price is a bit of a problem, but you get a lot of content. And you also have to remember you need to tune it to your difficulty level, just like ai war. I'm also looking at creeper world, Wasteland 2, and Neo scavenger. Need to try the demo on that last one first. Didn't like pillars of eternity. The controls and response system feels off, coming from Diablo background.

I got only Valkyria Chronicles thus far. Was hoping for a bit more than a 25% discount from a daily deal, but I've heard that it's worth it so I went ahead and violated my <$10 rule.

Other than that, I'm looking to get Trails in the Sky if it goes on a bigger discount, maybe RUSE and a number of cheaper silly things that could be worth some fun.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Sorry for the anti-post, but: for the first time since all these big sales became the new normal, I feel like I have enough video games.

I definitely am not done buying and playing new games, but I'm weirdly OK sitting out on the biggest sale of the year for once. Eh, there'll be one next year.

At least you've got the capability for restraint... I'm waaayyyyyyy over that number and just as impulsive as ever.   Not counting roms or things like that, which is a damn silly number all it's own.

Still though.... I havent bought anything from this sale either.  Just not seeing very much that's interesting at the moment.

Except.... wait a minute.  I just realized I should actually look at my wish list (or my "felt too lazy to deal with purchase" list) and see what deals are on there.  Welp, probably blew the "nothing bought this time" idea out of the water now.

If I do buy things though, hopefully I'll be able to actually remember what they were afterwards.

Ugh, I missed the sale for RUSE. I'll see if it ever goes on flash sale or daily deal, but I still might buy it at the end of the sale even if it doesn't go lower. Six bucks isn't that much.

My library is almost up to 70 games. Yikes. To be fair, a good number of them were free, parts of bundles, or gifts, but still.

Though looking at Doctorfrog's 273 unplayed games makes me feel a little better about myself.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

I'm doing a blog series running my mouth posting my opinion on each day's sales. Why? Because I clearly don't have enough to do between work, gaming and otherwise. Anyway, it's there.

;P

I've bought a few games so far but as with every sale, I wait till the last day for the best deals. Mostly looking at strategy games I've missed this past year. Also, you guys should keep an eye on Humble Bundle's store sales, they've been rather good this year.

I'm also looking at creeper world
I tried the demo and it was fun. Although a bit too easy. But I guess the missions will get harder towards the end. I'm sure it's a good game to play on days when you're too tired to play complex and challenging games.

And Neo Scavenger had too much reading for my taste.

I have that game, it gets a heck of alot more complicated as time goes on.  Doesnt take long to do that either;  that's not like really late game where it hits that point. It introduces all of the different gizmos at a pretty quick pace and goes from there.   You end up having this sprawling, tangled mass of a base with generators and conduits and other whatsits going every direction all over the place, and then all sorts of towers (and often more tangled mess out by those), which often need to actually be moved.  Like how Terran structures in Starcraft can move, they can be shifted around almost exactly like that.  There's never enough space, your power is limited, the overall structure of your base + the surrounding landscape gets complicated, and there's quite alot of different thingamajigs to build, and making the wrong choices will just get you wrecked.

There's also a sort of "aggressive" style to the game.  Other tower defense games, you have your specific area, you build in there, and the enemy comes to you.  In this, there's usually some "core" or something that you need to reach, which means you need to expand constantly INTO the Creep-filled territory.  I like that part alot;  the game never really feels like there's anything in the way of WAITING, which is a problem this genre often has.

The demo areas are stupidly easy and really dont convey much of it... I've never liked demos, for pretty much exactly that reason.  Usually dont bother with them.

I personally think the game is pretty darn great myself.  Tower defense as a whole can make for alot of strategic depth and they can get hard as nails, but they're usually a little too formulaic, sticking to certain trends a bit too much.  This one really doesnt.

I went a little bit overboard, but I am having fun so far.

Christmas loot:
the endless pack
shadowfall directors cut
South Park stick of truth
Legend of heroes: trails in the sky
age of wonders 3
Beyond Earth
Dynasty Warriors 8 (this is actually one of the best games I picked up. I really like this one.)
Galactic civilizations 3 (More of an investment. It's definitely not ready yet.)

I am up for multiplayer.
