...because Office is the dominant product on the planet and pretty much everyone uses it for work or school.
Only the people who actually have Windows 7. My school was perfectly fine with XP and pre-ribbon office.

My school runs Ribbon Office on XP.

Well then I know where the luck with not having to use the ribbon came from then ;)

Here comes a MASSIVE rant. Not even kidding.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 are both crap. 100% total copyrighted crap. It's been about 5 years or so since I've used windows xp (and I was only 8 at the time. Yeah I know dang 13 year olds should be doing their homework not ranting about how terrible windows is)

Here are the things that make it crap compared to linux.

1. If you lock your computer and try to log back in the screen goes black for 1-2 seconds and THEN you can use your computer. Linux doesn't do this nonsense.

2. After rebooting(which by it self usually takes longer then linux eg, NO DONT WAIT FOR THE 23 PROGRAMS TO CLOSE, RESTART ALREADY) after you login you have wait 1-2 minutes until it is done doing whatever it does. This happens on every windows computer I've ever used including some fairly fast ones(Right out of the box after I uninstall the manufacturer packaged programs). Takes about 4 seconds MAX for Linux to load after you login.

3. STUFF RUNS SLOWER. If you google for "left4dead 2 linux" you will see that valve has ported l4d2 to Linux with OpenGL and that it runs at 320fps on Linux compared to 270fps on Windows. According to them this is AFTER they spent a lot of trouble optimizing it on windows. I also get a lot more FPS in multiplatform games like Minecraft on Linux then on Windows.

4. Stuff runs weird. On my cruddy google CROS test laptop(2gb ram 1.6ghz single core cpu 16gb ssd, I installed ubuntu on it) if I load 20 or so tabs in google chrome(takes a while) and click "x" the program closes right away. For windows on my 3.2ghz quad core cpu with 6gb of ram chrome refuses to close in under 10 seconds when I have a 20 or so tabs open.

5. Linux is just generally better. For example at one point when I was waiting for my windows computer to arrive I couldn't wait to play Half life 2 so I decided to try to run it on my dads linux computer. It was about 1gb short of the disk space I needed to install it(Because I had set up dual boot with Oracle Enterprise linux and Ubuntu earlier because my dad was using enterprise linux for a database and was taking up all the disk space, TMI I know) so logically I decided to try it anyways in hopes that it would overflow into the memory. Worked perfectly. Windows on the other hand functions HORRIBLY with low disk space.

6. Linux is free. Windows isn't. The only reason I still use windows is because most games don't run on on linux(AI war is a happy exception, only problem with it on wine is that alt tabbing works a bit strangely)

7. Batch is bad. Bash took me about no time to learn and Batch is so clunky that I'm not even going to bother.

8. Windows task manager doesn't work. On linux if you want to kill a process it's a simple "kill -9 <pid>" or  a "killall -9 <process name>" on every Windows computer I've ever used no matter how fast or slow(Not that REMOVING load should matter how fast the computer is) killing a process doesn't really kill it(then you have to click "end program now" and THEN click "Don't search for a solution" (Yeah I know you can disable the solution searcher but you shouldn't have to)) On linux a kill -9 gets rid of the process NOW and it takes less time for you to do it.

Excuse me while I go set up dual boot on my new windows computer.

Sorry for the rant but everytime I see a windows thread I can't resist.

Are you sure you're talking about the actual processes tab of Task Manager, not the default applications one? Because the only time I see the solution searcher is via the end task button. End process has closed more or less anything with usually only one confirmation.

I get annoyed when the OS won't let me kill a process, and iirc linux does less of that than Windows.

Though I have found Process Hacker quite adept at killing windows processes I thought unkillable.  Often in technically amusing ways.

This is your setup being slow. Mine takes about a third of a second.

Doesn't matter every linux computer I've ever used doesn't do this and every windows does. (I just asked my dad. Same thing with his overly expensive work laptops). Should never happen especially out of the box

You are probably right, admittedly I'm not that great with windows compared to linux BUT it shouldn't matter. END should mean end not give me 2 confirmation boxes. In linux kill does exactly what it says.

EDIT: To clarify I shouldn't have to know that process tab kills differently. Windows being more user friendly is a myth. In linux all I had to do was lookup "How to kill a process" when I was brand new to linux and it did exactly what it said it did.

The button in task manager should be called "Give you 2 more dialogue boxes after a few second wait and then kill the task ©"

To be fair, I think the confirmation steps are a reasonable approach assuming the common case of the user not being very informed of what's going on.  Don't want a misclick to destabilize the system or cause loss of work, etc.

What I'd like is some way of disabling the confirmations.  Thankfully, there are 3rd party tools that largely accomplish my process-slaughtering desires.

Fine, mom >:( An underlying issue to this is that batch is junk and it's not really easy to kill a process with it(No way a uninformed user could accidentally mess stuff up via command line, they wouldn't even use it)

EDIT: Taskkill doesn't seem THAT bad (assumed that it would be terrible because quit using batch the second I tried to learn some of the most basic commands because of how poorly they were done) but I can't verify that it works well and there doesn't seem to be any easy documentation to it like man in linux.

EDIT AGAIN: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb491009.aspx I was wrong again. However I can't seem to find a command line documentation tool for windows and the taskkill syntax is garbage.

Calm down there sparky.

Anyway, I need to get around to messing with Linux these days. Just never enough time in the day to do everything that I want.

How to end Windows processes like a pro

CTRL + SHIFT + ESC

Blind type the exe name up to 3 characters

hit ALT + P
Enter

Process closed. Works even if you can't see the task manager (it will ALWAYS have focus when you hit CTRL + SHIFT + ESC) just make sure you actually have it set to start on the process page.... otherwise alt p does nothing ;p

That has a certain appeal, like a guy sitting in a guard tower reading a newspaper for 2 hours, then calmly taking out a revolver and pointing (without looking) in a seemingly random direction and pulling the trigger.  Sound of screaming, enemy down ;)

;D

It is a good thing to know though, because chances are when you really need it the app you try to close doesn't relinquish window or mouse focus, or also fun, somehow makes your mouse pointer invisible. Love that ;p

Appears to be Alt + E in windows 7. Once again, MS randomly changing stuff for absolutely no reason. Rage!

If it doesn't want to give up window control, CTRL+ALT+DELETE usually seems to force its way to the front, and has a open task manager button.
