I had fond memories of the first dungeon keeper, never played the second one though. A game of dwarfs looks like it has potential as a dungeon keeper-esque follow up. While unfortunately you're not a villain, it looks like there's potential. Dungeon keeper meets dwarf fortress (looks more on the DF than DK side) with a UI that's actually usable.

If we're going to be on the topic of old-school awesome games worth playing. X-com is pretty amazing, but I think most people know about that one, its still worth bringing up.

Myst is one of my favorite game series ever. I've recently been playing through Uru again and have Riven installed but it's buggy on my machine, not sure why. Myst V was also good, I have that one in my game stack as well. The third one I never played at all, it's called Revelations or something isn't it?

As for the myst series. I really liked the Journeyman Project (1 and 2, never played the third), it was a myst-like game with time travel and killer robots :D. The same style of game. Its much easier though to be fair, though you could actually die and you can't simply wander around to enjoy the scenery - though the gameplay and story felt more focused.

One of the early posts mentioned freespace 2.  In case anyone is interested, the source code was released a few years ago and the engine was rewritten and all new graphics created for it.  Check out the website below.  As long as you have a legal copy of the game, you download the new engine and graphics packs and you have a modern game.  They've even redone the entire freespace 1 game to use the new engine as well. (It's all legal btw)

Ah, excellent, I am in your debt for that lead.  When I'm back on a computer that can allow decent control of a flight sim I should really give that a try.

While I was looking at their main page I saw a listing of their top forum boards and under Topics/Posts I saw "General Discussion 19,340 553,406" and went  :o  :o , then realized that I had mistakenly mentally inserted a comma in the middle there.

If you go into the forums the "General Freespace Discussion" forum has instructions.  It's pretty easy to set up and looks very nice when it's done.  There's also a lot of fan made campaigns that you can download as well.  One of the most recent and largest is the wing commander saga.

The original post asked about Deus Ex. and from what i can tell no-one recommended this to him...?

Now for me this is one of the greatest video games ever made... what was ground breaking then is still rather special now and the experience (assuming you can stomach the aged graphics) is still fresh and vibrant today IMO

however, the reason why you should get this game is two-fold.... first because the orginal is brilliant and is one of the definning moments in gaming history, and second because once your done with the main game you can downlaod and play for free the unbelieveably good mod entitled 'The Nameless Mod' (TNM). It took 'Offtopic Productions' (as the mod team called themselves) 7 years of dedicated labour to produce what i consider to be the greatest MOD for any game ever made. The setting is unique, the freedom of choice and play style is marvelous, the voice acting throughout is brilliant, the story development, characters and level design superb. and you get to kill people with a spork!

TNM alone makes deus ex a definite choice in terms of what classic to play - let alone the main game itself. If you like very free-form gaming with choice that matters then TNM is one of the best experiences you can find...

If anyone is interested to hear I've decided to just get Planescape: Torment for now.
Still in the beginnings, trying to get to Pharod, wish I had more time but I have a life now, which is sometimes unfortunate.  :-\
The Deus Ex mod sounds cool actually, might have to do that.
But right now between work, Valley, Strange Journey, Mirror's Edge again, casual MTG, D&D, trying to make a video game myself, learning differential equations, and everything not nerd related, time is getting tight.

Necro but if you've any interest in Dungeon Keeper / Theme Hospital -esque games, Startopia as just released on GOG.com - it's like the aforementioned but IN SPACE(station). Awesome stuff; literally been waiting for this moment for years.

Many years ago I played Space Colony, although it has DK elements, it felt overly casual, so I would not recommend this to anyone. Startopia on the other hand I never ever heard about.

Edit: and the only game after DK2 (in this genre) that I really enjoyed was Evil Genius. Haven't played anything that I could compare with ever since.
