What is your "go to" gaming website?
« on: October 26, 2010, 05:44:02 am »
I mostly use gaming websites for two things:

1) To keep up with what's cool, what's coming up soon or what has just been released. Basically the news.
2) When I come across a new game I want to lookup the game to find out when it was / going to be released by whom, what genre and what the gameplay is like.

when you want these things, what site do you go to?

I rarely ever visit any gaming sites, but I've found that when I'm looking for a particular game review, I always end up going to IGN.com.

honestly at this point I rarely buy games without visiting their forum. Perhaps not posting, or staying long, but i generally get a good idea of what it is like by reading strategies/aars/etc
Also, honestly id say my main way to get random game information is through the eve forums - if a game is good enough to be talked about on another game's forum, its generally good enough to at least get the demo
Ideas? Suggestions? Concerns? Bugs to be squashed? Report them on the Mantis Bugtracker!

I go to IGN too, though Lordy knows why - I've often found significant issue to be had with the impartiality of their reviews. Still, that's always my first port of call!

Aside from that, Gamespot is OK.

Metacritic or GameRankings are good if you want a Rotten Tomatoes style metascore.

It's good for walkthroughs and I do this when I need a walkthrough, however when you know nothing about the game walktrhough is a bit to early for me to watch I want to *read* about the game first. And while official site of a game is a valuable source of information, they also tend to be biased (which is absolutely normal).  That's why I'm looking for an alternate, more unbiased views....

Theres nothing more unbiased than the raw playthrough - if you don't want spoilers then reading forums helps, but ultimately, if you are undecided watching the first minutes of a games gameplay will tell you all you want to know. After all - only place where you see real gameplay is when a real playthrough (aiming for 100% even) is attempted.

With most games having like 50x videos the amount spoilerd by 1 is at best the intro and the first mission. And besides, its also good Entertainment, as long as someone made a proper playlist.

Whenever I got some free time I play online games.
Some of my favorite sites are www.pogo.com on which i love to play monopoly and Scrabble most. Some times i also go to www.ign.com for playing games.

Rock Paper Shotgun and one of the other computer sites. I'm a bit of a compulsive news reader, so my RSS is pretty chock full though. Oh, and the official Arcen blog ;)

I tend to avoid all of the big game sites as they are usually Flash pits of JavaScript mired, advertisement riddled, festering paragons of horrific web design decisions that assume you have a web browser window as wide as your Final Cut Pro interface. Even if the content were worth it, I'd avoid it and I can't be bothered to hunt down Greasemonkies and Stylish templates just to read a predictably blathering five paragraphs on how Dwarf Fortress uses ASCII.
