What, if any, MMORPGs do ypu play?
« on: April 10, 2015, 09:50:43 pm »
Just out of interest, do you play MMORPGs? If so, which ones do you play.
The variation of these types of games is pretty high, mmorpgs are counted to the most played multiplayer games in the world.
Especially free to play games are mostly played to death but even games with monthly costs have a huge amount of fans (World of Warcraft is still counted as one of the best selling games).

I'm playing from time to time Mabinogi, a korean MMORPG which is set very loosely in the irish mythology. I like the gameplay design that you can freely train almost every skill in the game (except some race specific ones) similiar to the Elder Scrolls titles. While there are typical archtypes like warrior, mage, ranger etc., you can freely mix the skills of those, creating your unique skill set. Skills have 16 levels and to increase the level you have to use them regulary (similiar to TES). Increasing a skill level needs ability points that you get from leveling up. You can also reset every week your level with a system called "rebirth". It allows you to "start" new, you loose your level and all the stats you get from it, you can change your loo and even your gender ut you keep all the skilsl you've learned so far. This allows a less grindly gameplay, focusing more on having fun instead of killing hundreds of monsters just to get that perticular level.
I started as Alchemist, a support-like character, realized soon that he lacks some combat power so I switched to warrior to fill the gap. After alchemy received a big buff I rely now more on alchemy but from time to time the melee skilsl come in handy.
There is still some stuff that I don't like about Mabinogi. You can have only one char for free which isn't all that bad considering that you can change him freely like you want, including appearance and gender (but not the name or race) but it still seems cheap that you have to purchase every new character for a fee and not even offering character bundles for a reduced price. The other thing are pets. Pets are a common thing in MMORPGs, in some games they have a bigger impact as in others. In Mabingi you can use them for travels or as a bag to store items. You get only two pets for free and all other epts are only aviable in the web shop. Most of these animals are not even worth it, but limited time pets have deep impact on the gameplay because they come with good stats or some strong ability. As example I own a bone dragon with a skill, that damages enemies whenever the dragon is summoned. You can get some limited time pets from events ( I think you get a third pet from finishing a story campaign) but that's a rare case and involves a lot of work.
Also some skills are randomly awarded when using other skills. the amount of these skills is ridiculous low but this little random factor may drive you crazy because you see other people that have it and you don't because they had just more luck.
Besides that, I prefer Mabinogi over all other MMORPGs I played so far (and I played some). The freedom in doing what I want is refreshing from the typical class system that you see in most games. I can play a typical class but I don't have to. Also I'm not forced on doing any of the story quests, the game makes just fun with all the side stuff they offer. Smithing your own weapons, tailoring clothes, trading goods between different cities to make some profit, cooking, fishing and a lot more.

Another game I like is Path of Exile but it's more like a singleplayr game since every player plays on his own version of the world instead of sharing it with the other players. only the towns are filled with players so you can trade or create parties in order to do quests together. Similiar to Mabinogi you can freely create a character. PoE has a HUGE skill tree that reminds me a lot of the sphero board of Final Fantasy X (damn, I love that game). That huge skill tree comes with some drawbacks, you will get a little confused what you want to build and in the end you will end up with a build that does not work out very good. Except that the game plays a lot like Diablo and fans praise it to be better than Diablo 3 (I never played the third game in the series so I won't judge here). What i miss here a little is a currency. Some people claim this makes the game refreshing but for new players it makes the whole thing a lot more confusing. Instead of a currency you trade with items and especially as new players there is a chance you get ripped of from other players because you don't know what's worth how much. A currency gives you always the feeling for the value of items. You want to sell stuff for more that you get from the NPC shops but without a currency you loose that feeling. I avoid all player trades because I fear that someone will just rip me off my stuff and I end with somethign totally worthless.

What online rpgs do you play and why?

I was playing Guild Wars 2 but lost interest around level 50. The gameplay became way too repetitive and it was yet another second job that I had little interest in. I'm sure it's great if I could get a group of people going but I couldn't. I have too many other priorities.

I occasionally play Warframe for switching off my head, and I sometimes consider getting back into EVE.

So, not much really.

None right now. I don't feel I have the time for MMOs and they also tend to turn into grindy slogs after a while, and I'm not too keen on that. The only MMO I still have any interest in is EVE Online. I do occasionally reactivate my sub and keep working on my project of building a Freighter all by my lonesome.

It's fun, but takes so much time.

Used to be really into these.... Everquest was my favorite, way back when.

And then World of Warcraft happened.  I consider the genre to have been forever corrupted after that.  The LEGIONS OF CLONES came, thinking "If we ALSO make something like WoW, it'll immediately print money! Yay!  CORPORATE LOGIC FTW!!!!".  I really, REALLY despise that game.  Too many bad trends were set there, that have NEVER GONE AWAY.

There was though City of Heroes, which was fantastic... but was shut down recently, because derp.

Eve Online is also different, however, if there's a better cure for insomnia, I've not found it.  Obviously this means I dont play that one.  I've tried it, but... yeah.  I found myself dozing off in front of the keyboard.  Instant uninstall.

There's also Korean-style MMOs (that's what I've always called them anyway), things like Ragnarok Online and all sorts of games of that sort... THOSE fortunately do not at all clone WoW.  But they can be unfortunately grind-tastic.  I'll get into one of those every now and then, as they're often creative enough to be interesting.  Instead of just doing WoW over and over and over and over and over...

Currently though I'm not playing any at the moment... all the WoW clones had me totally burned out, and I still rather am.  There's not that much that looks interesting right now, or at least, not that I've seen.

I dont typically count games like PoE or Diablo to be this type; I do play those, just not hugely often, and always solo.  Nobody I know would give a fart about either game.

I might give one of the Korean ones a go though, have a look at some of the current ones.  The blasted western ones are definitely out for me right now, but those arent.  I havent had a look at them in AWHILE though so I'm not quite sure just what's there.

I don't play any.
I have an account for Pathfinder Online, but I'm waiting for it to be more better before starting to play.  That and I have very little time right now.

I used to play Final Fantasy XI and Star Wars Galaxy, but then I started a family and haven't had time for MMORPGs since.  I tried Final Fantasy XIV when it came out, and again briefly when it rebooted, but it didn't stick.  I've tried several others over the years, but I've never found one I thought I could dedicate for than a few hours to.  I just don't really like the genre, I guess.  There's a huge social aspect to them, and though I wouldn't say I'm anti-social, I'm clearly not social enough for MMORPGs.  I've tried a few MOBAs, and though the gameplay is interesting to me, the social aspect gets in the way again.  I don't mind playing CS:GO and similar games with strangers, but only because I can mute the chat if people are being stupid.  Which is more often than not, I'd say.

To be fair though, Misery, WoW did a lot of things right too. While it's overall corrupted the genre, it DID fix a lot of horridities in the genre (yes, that's a word)

EVE Online sounded always nice to me, like an online version of X, but there are several factors that I don't like to play this game. First, monthly subscription. I avoid games that have those. The same reason why I never played WoW. The other thing is, skills/talents need REAL life time to level. Combine this with the fact that you have to pay each month and you have a good money grab. Want to level that talent? Please wait and pay for the upcoming months. The game might be good but that's a big no for me.

WoW seems like a good game 8all the sales cannot be wrong about it) but I hear that in the end you will have nothing left to do and older players are with each new expansion a little disappointed how little stuff they get to do. Since I never played WoW I won't judge it but I won't play it either, again because of monthkly subscription.

I agree that korean-style rpgs are different, both visually and from the gameplay. Like mentioned above, mabinogi tries to get a different approach on the whole system on the other hand, it's much like TES which is a western style rpg. I thought of trying TES online, but again, monthly fees (which are now removed) and I heard there ARE classes with their own skills which irritates me seeing it labels itself as "TES". Maybe I got this wrong and the classes just give you a starting bonus like in the older ones (Morrowind). I don't know. I will wait a little since there is still a lot of criticism against TESO and I'm not willing to pay that amount of money for a game that ends up not worth the money.

I never understood TESO in the first place. The elder scrolls games are great at having mods, and aren't especially standout in much else. And then they put it in a genre where proper mods can't be made, and expect it to work anyway.

Then it drops into F2P sometime later, which more than likely means it didn't work as well as they thought it would.

Unless Xenoblade counts (it doesn't, singleplayer only) then no, I don't play MMORPGs. I used to play Guild Wars (circa Nightfall) and Guild Wars 2 nearer its release, but neither kept my attention for very long what with school/work. Spent about a month completely enthralled by both of them though, so I'd consider recommending them.

I occasionally sell stuff in Guild Wars 2 since I can do that while reading.
Other than that I'm hoping I'll have time to start playing Haven & Hearth again whenever they release the new version along with a new world.
I also have Hello Kitty Online installed in case I ever feel like playing that.

Every time I hear Haven&Hearth is doing something new someone points out that eventually it'll be crowded full of russian PK groups again and I back off from it again.
