Warning: Nerd Post (Linux)

It's about time I got this started. I've already installed Ubuntu, Kubuntu, PCLinuxOS and Archlinux. It's about time I got my hands dirty.

Gentoo is awesome, but I went back to Archlinux.  Arch is just as minimalist (maybe even more so), but you don't have to recompile everything when there's an update.  Unless you want to.

Yeah, Archlinux is still the distro that just "clicks" with me. But I really want to try Gentoo. If not just for the chance to really understand compiling.

Gentoo is a great learning distro, but if you really want to learn the ins and outs, give Linux From Scratch a shot.

Yeah LFS is my next step once I get my bearings around Gentoo.

Geez you people go crazy with Linux. Learning Ubuntu on the fly out here is hard enough.

Gentoo rocks. I'm one of those people that actually LIKES compiling everything if I can. It's better for performance after all.

Not if you are running off a USB on wildly different hardware all the time. ;)

Well, in that case you're likely better off running another distro, eh? :P

Indeed.

(I am running Mint on mine... and all the other geeks in the mission are putting it on their USB's too.)

I had it running on Wine for a good while. It took longer to load and had some weird bugs with it, but that was the pre-unity version.

This is largely a myth, the differences are so negligible you would never notice. Heck, the time spent compiling will likely never be made back in time saved.
