I hope this turns out to be Japan's equivalent of Das Boot - a fantastic foreign (sci-fi) war film.    I am so sick and tired of what passes for sci-fi lately (Avatar  ).  How I miss the days of serious 'WWII in outer space' themed movies where fleets clash with epic fury.  I was glad when Battlestar Galactica seemed to be heading in this direction (the original two-part series launch, plus one or two episodes later), but the show ultimately degenerated into a ridiculous soap opera.

Seeing how much they got right in that trailer i am now officially hyped for this - could easily best BSG remake and the assorted as Yamato was truly epic - though if its just a 2 hour movie the story will suffer - as the conflict couldn't possible be told in 2 hours....

Seems to have some insanely high CG Budget though

I'm optimistic too.  I could pick out scenes from that trailer that are right out of the anime, so like you said, they seem to be making a faithful adaptation. 

Now, if we could only get someone to make an AI War movie....

(Never heard of it, but it looks pretty interesting--would be into it if the story is not completely superfluous and all action-based.)

It's been a loooong time since I've seen the anime series ('Star Blazers' in the US), but I recall the show being a remarkably sober look at war.  For example, after every big battle, the coffins for all the dead would be placed on the deck of the Yamato while the captain gave a eulogy (the living were all in spacesuits, of course).  Could you imagine that happening in any cartoon today?!?  Star Blazers tried to portray a real war with death, heroism, fleet tactics, logisitics, R&D....really everything you would expect in a serious war story.  It was light years (pun intended) ahead of Star Wars...and still is.

I'm not much of a fan of anime either.  I watched Star Blazers when I was about 10.    Since then, I've only been impressed with two anime series:  Cowboy Bebop (in my opinion, the best science fiction vision to grace television since the original Star Trek) and Claymore (a remarkably intriguing story with surprisingly good character development for anime).  That's about it, despite the best efforts of my anime fan friends.

I saw pretty much all of the original Japanese series and own that spiffy little "movie" box set that came out on dvd many a year back---here's hoping!

I vaguely recall work also at least in the planning stages on a Harlock movie...
