That's awesome! They even included the guy he was with when you had to do that double boss battle on the airship. First... That guy who sneezed and ultros. Then "air force." Yikes, not so much fun back to back when I was a kid.

Still, his whole arc from the time you meet him on the raft to the time relm paints him is just great. I don't think I've seen a comedic ongoing side nemesis done so well in a game before or since.

True -- I put in more hours on ff1 than ff6. Never did beat it as a kid. I remember the terror of trying to get all the way into and out of some of those dungeons. The swamp near elf land, for instance. And the earth cave to a lesser extent. I could make it reliably to the class upgrades, and then just sort of got lost. These newer remakes on the ds/gba/iphone/etc all have the difficult of that game turned WAY down. But the new graphics are nice. ;)

I still have vivid memories of how hard the swamp cave was.  Poison is not a minor condition.

Yeah, and then you run into those squid-faced "Wizards" for the first time at the end, searching through like 10 different rooms for the one with the elf's crown... yaarg!  I must have played that cave like 30 times in my life.

I don't do DLC usually, but now I have to. It's the closest we are ever going to get to that final fantasy.

I had the Nintendo Power guide for this, and was following along with it. It suggested bringing 99 heal potions for that. Ridiculous! And yet, pretty much required. That sort of grinding doesn't happen in modern games, and thank God for that!

I had the Nintendo Power Guide, too, but I liked not reading it for tips of that sort.  It was more of a narrative, almost like a pictorial novel of the game in some senses, which I really enjoyed.  I still maintain my subscription to Nintendo Power (I had about a 5 year lapse there, but otherwise have had that subscription since 1989 or 1990; issue 20-something, anyhow), but it's not nearly the same these days.  In some ways it's better, but I miss all the strategy components, and the cheat code corner, etc.  It just felt like games were more full of secret stuff back then.

But the grinding was crazy.  I didn't buy potions one at a time -- I'd instead grind levels up in that north forest area where you could fight ponies and ogres (whatever they were called there).  Then once I was sufficiently over-leveled, I didn't need the 99 potions.  I'd also try to get the level 3 or 4 spells before going in there, which took a ton of GP, but made taking out the wizards easier once you got to them.
