Judging from your review it is still a P2W grind fest. Either you pay, or you have to grind for months.

Which puts this game on my hype meter somewhere below Farmville. Yeah so its tribes done right. Sadly its P2W instead of a proper game.

Like TF2, the vast majority of the unlockable weapons are sidegrades rather than upgrades.

Player skill is the deciding factor every single time.

Should have just said this, I always overthink it.  Ultimately, yeah, player skill is still the deciding factor.

Funny that you mention TF2 where clan play is 100% dependent on "crafted" weapons and tactics based on them. So that is like.. the most negative comparison you could bring up in my mind ;P

Also TF2 became entirely broken by these many items because you can no longer predict what the enemy has. One of the PRIMARY features of TF imo.

In a sense, they made TF2 something else, it is still a team based shooter but it has become completely random. That is imo not a good thing. Even EA understood that classes or weapons need to unlock in such a way that you can always predict the abilities of someone based on his rank. That makes it possible to plan ahead, where as in TF2 you can not plan ahead. With the right (paid) item sets you have a distinct advantage.

But back to Tribes Ascend
How long does it take to unlock the first class? And what class is that? To begin with, what are the classes we have and how useful are they in capture the flag? On attack, on Defense?

Unlocking classes is stupidly easy even without paying. A few hours a day of playing CTF nets you enough XP to unlock another class in less than a week. It's the weapons that are horribly priced. 100k for a weapon? ARGGH! Everything else is reasonable. (perks, packs, belt items etc)

On another note, I seem to be doing fine so far, and I'm using the stock weapons. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18752648/TribesAscend%202012-04-10%2014-05-34-986.png

Brute and Raider are the most expensive classes and they take maybe a week, week and a half to unlock.  And then it gets easier from there and I'm being very conservative.

Keeping in mind that with the base three classes you can go for the flag, attack enemies or defend the base.

Classes:

Light:
 - Pathfinder (capper/chaser) [Unlocked at start]
 - Sentinel (sniper, cap-killer)
 - Infiltrator ("invisible" base harassment)

Medium:
 - Soldier (general purpose mayhem, midfield fighter, excellent duelling class) [Unlocked at start]
 - Technician (specialised base defense and maintenance/repair)
 - Raider (base attack. Excels at indoors fighting, very durable. Basically counter to technician)

Heavy:
 - Juggernaut (Artillery/bombardment to take out outdoors base assets) [Unlocked at start]
 - Doombringer (Heavy on Flag, "offensive" base defense)
 - Brute (Soldier on crack. Less maneuverable, more sturdy, area denial indoors, RUBBISH at duelling)

Also, I strongly disagree with the P2W accusations. There is only one weapon I consider a PURE upgrade (and it can still be unlocked with XP just like everything else) and that is the technicians Thumper. The reason I consider it an upgrade is that the tech spends 95% of his time indoors, and the high damage grenade launcher is vastly superior to the SMG indoors.

And the fact that I play infiltrator and end up eating the grenades.

Were beta accounts reset? I guess it's worth to at least try it. If beta accounts were not reset then this game is gonna be a total joke for new players.

I guess the real reason why I HATE p2w games is that if you join them when they release "public" you are already at a distinct disadvantage.

Any noob servers I should know about?

No, accounts won't be reset, there would be a lot of unhappy paying customers otherwise.

And no, it won't be for new players.  As we've been saying all along, this is skill based game, not who is the richest.  If you practice, you can get good enough to hold the field on your own.

So, tell me some noob servers please. There are dedicated servers, right? With rank limitations? (I am Installing it now) And I don't wanna play on servers where everyone has everything except me ;p

Is it not generally true that if you join an online game at "release" the folks who've been playing beta for 3 months (or whatever) will have a significant advantage over you, even if the individual matches have no persistence between them at all?

Couldn't tell you, I'm on college campus ATM so telling which servers are is a bit difficult. ;)  But there is probably a couple up by now, considering they came out with custom servers as well.

Pretty much, I mean we are all at an advantage for having played AVWW during BETA compared to anyone new that joins up.

I played BF3 in beta and the only advantage I had from that was that I hated Metro. Beta stats were not persistent ;p

And for AVWW playing the beta is a distinct disadvantage compared to new players. Because you are confused by new and old concepts, changes you didn't notice and changes you even wanted but forgot about.

Also.. and primarily, AVWW is not a competitive MP game ;P Most of these never offer more than 1-2 maps in the beta exactly because of this.
