Towns. Anyone played it yet?

So, apparently it's a citybuilding RPG. I LOVE the idea of it, but, does it actually work?

Has anyone tried it yet?

Nope, haven't. I watched the Kickstarter videos but after a few minutes I sort of glazed over with boredom. It had nothing to really CATCH my attention. Perhaps it's awesome. I just don't know :/

Or wait, no, that wasn't this. The one I'm thinking of was in 3D.

Its interestingish. Haven't played it very much but I know theres a huge thread about it on bay12, and theres certainly citybuilding involved.

I played it a bit, was not impressed by tutorial / a number of options to choose from to build (overwhelming) now, after having played A Game of Dwarves, it all suddenly makes more sense, do I'm looking forward to returning to it to re-evaluate. Another one, that is similar: Gnomoria.

It's kinda like a simplified Dwarf Fortress.  Well, it's still pretty complex, but less so than DF.  Not a bad game, but still has some polishing left to do, I think.

So, I got up early this morning, I played the demo a good bit, and ended up buying the game.

I agree it's got a lot of room left for polish, but, I could also see myself playing it a LOT. There is quite a bit of depth to it even now.

Fascinating. I might have to try this then.

So did anyone tried Gnomoria too? I mean it's kind of sad how much steam makes it or breaks it. Towns and Gnonoria have been around for quite awhile, no one really paid attention. Until Towns got on steam... Liked Towns? Try out Gnomoria, and let me know =)

I do plan on checking that one out, but, probably not before the weekend. And, depending on how Saturday goes, maybe not even then.

Okay, I played a bit, and now I see what unpolished means. I don't want to sound mean, but it looks that the author have no idea how to make UI work smoothly, so I have little hope that it will ever get fixed.

My mine gripe with the game is a lack of feedback. when something is not being done, that you expect to be done, you have no freaking way to find out why. For example, I asked to build a wood detailer, but nothing happened. I had to check the presence of wood and stone manually (which is a chore) and they were available. And I was scratching my head why... turned out that although your people can mine and get in and out of the mined area without a ladder allright, you need a ladder to transport the freaking stone.

I mean was it so difficult to put an exclamation mark over the detailer placement and give a tooltip "you people can't get to stone"?

It is not clear how different types of food are better or worse than the others, and there is no manual or anything. This is why while A Game of Dwarves is lacklustre, at least being developed by a big studio it has enough attention to details like this.

Oh, and shortcuts for everything, like mining and chopping would certainly help!

Wow, even DF (which is the uncrowned king of obscure game mechanics and agonizing UI) does that. "The dwarf suspended the construction of <Construction>." or "Urist McStonecrafter cancels Make Stonecrafts, need Stone."

Some Towns vids: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL13C2217355664856

Another thing that can be improved is the messages interface. Every time I pause or un-pause an item like "game paused" is added to message log, and the message log button starts flashing. WTF? I know I just paused the game, why I should be forced to click the button to open the message log to view this entirely useless message? And if I don't it keeps flashing, so if a useful message decides to show up just for a change I won't know this...

Just peeked at the official forums and it's mainly barren apart from sickies threads there are only a few posts during last few months.  So I'll put this on the shelf for now, and in 6 month I'll see if any of the potential in the game has developed. I'll still have to check out Gnomoria though some time.

This game is in ALPHA too, which, you know, would be nice if the developers and/or STEAM mentioned this on the page. It doesn't. Anywhere. TSK TSK TSK TSK TSK Devs. That really annoys me when they don't mention important information like that.

Yea, I picked up on its early state and that's part of the reason I didn't get it.  But the steam page certainly didn't help at all in finding that out.  Unless I missed it.

And steam doesn't do many betas, and I don't remember them ever selling them an alpha (could just be forgetting it), so it's that much less likely to be guessed.
