Yeah, yeah. I mean I noticed the game a few months before, I was hoping that because it made it to steam it got playable by now... Oh well.

That's actually disappointing if the game is in alpha/beta on steam and there's no indication about that. I doubt they're trying to be predatory, but it comes off as false advertising.

Yeah, its one of Steam's issues is that they aren't always clear on information such as this, though I more often attribute that to the developers' not saying either. Seeing as Valve doesn't do any active testing on the games.

I honestly didn't think valve even allowed beta/alpha games at all. I guess since Towns went through greenlight it is a little different - but it would really be best if it kept beta/alpha off their servers so there's never a question about if something is a release or not.

I guess that opens the question of a crappy incomplete "full release" product vs a beta, but eh.

Valve has allowed several BETAs actually, I can't remember who but I seem to recall them allowing AAA BETA games on Steam in the recent past.

Ravaged, Chivalry, Airmech, Guns of Icarus, Gear Up, and several others have had betas on steam (DOTA2 and CS:GO, if you want to count them).  They generally have only been accessible by using a key from the developers, and have always been clearly marked as beta.

The Towns developers have said that the game is fully playable and enjoyable, but many in the community disagree that that means it is ready for release.

Personally, I've had a lot of fun with it, but I think the devs have done themselves a disservice by releasing it in its current state.  Maybe they couldn't wait for monetary reasons.  Who knows?

Yeah, I have to agree its doing a disservice to their customers, but if they believe its in a "release" state, then who are we to argue with that. Still, they're going to get hammered in the PR department when people play the game expecting a polished release and finding a beta-quality game. They can avoid that by allowing people to play a demo though.

It's kinda like a simplified Dwarf Fortress.  Well, it's still pretty complex, but less so than DF.  Not a bad game, but still has some polishing left to do, I think.

So, I got up early this morning, I played the demo a good bit, and ended up buying the game.

I agree it's got a lot of room left for polish, but, I could also see myself playing it a LOT. There is quite a bit of depth to it even now.

That's the problem, I'm too obsessed with Dwarf Fortress to try others!

I'm going to have to put in a plug for Maia in this thread, as it seems like the same genre of game - and I know there's a few fans of that genre here.

It's on kickstarter and looks fairly interesting, even will have lava/water flooding for you DF junkies! According to kicktraq it looks like it'll be down to the wire, which is the only reason I'm putting a plug in really.

I've known about that since before the kickstarter, the DF forum has been talking to him for awhile and helped more or less kickstart the kickstarter.

Doesn't make it any less awesome though. :)

I imagine you saying this while sipping a Starbucks and adjusting your turtleneck.

Turtlenecks are kinda itchy if you haven't worn them for awhile though. Or maybe it was just the kind of turtleneck I had before when the ones I had fit.

Eitherway, I do not has a coffee. 8)

Do well-crafted spiral or byzantine bright aluminum bracelets count? I've made plenty of those. (I'll probably get around to something more armorer and less craftsdwarf eventually when I have more to spend on things)
