TOUHOU Discussion! (Image heavy, spoilers ze~)
« on: August 25, 2010, 12:04:11 am »
I noticed that, surprisingly, there are more TOHO players than I thought originally whom are infiltrating the AI War ranks, protecting the world of Gensokyo from the menacing AI.  Henceforth I create this maniacal thread that will sound utter nonsense to anyone but a Youkai.  I apologize ahead for such a messy post.

MY BEAUTIFUL SHOP OF OUR MASTER ZUN, of whom I tend to commonly masquerade as "ZOON".

Personally I've been a follower of ZUN since perhaps half a year ago, hearing about the popular STG interested me into playing ESOD, where I soon discovered that I was absolutely horrible, an embarrassment to represent the wonderful shrine maiden of paradise, or the evil magician thief.  I never really practiced the games too much--my natural ability for shoot em ups is rather average, and I easily commit the most foolish mistakes ever known to STG history such as bumping into random bullets, and having a perfectionist attitude a lot of the time (MUST GET TO POC even though there are bullets and enemies everywhere).

I can 1cc all of the TOHO games on easy [with good clearance], but I would say I'm close to playing normal, but I always have the tendency to incur random deaths, and I rarely bomb; not that I'm a masochist, but because pressing X is much too difficult for me, *cough*.

Ah, so the latest game, as you should know, is 12.8 (Great Fairy Wars) which stars Cirno and the three fairies seen in the mangas "?????".  Unfortunately, I am not one of those fanatics of the whole "?/baka/PoFV manual" thing, but I do appreciate the new mini-game ol' ZUN has developed for us during the last Comiket.  The whole "freeze bullets" ordeal is a nice fusion of StB/PoFV/vanilla gameplay.  I don't quite understand why people suddenly jumped to the conclusion that this game was horrendously difficult and impossible because the game gives the player plenty of lives and bombs, and is rather short compared to most of the games.

As a lovely side-note, I for one, am quite fond of Mr. Hirasaka's drawing style, even if it wasn't ZUN who did the game art.  Subsequent to my discovery of another favourite character... mufufu~

GFW 12.8 lunatic footage here.

Ah, so I can beat all six in-game routes fairily (pun) easily; I should be nearing unlocking of easy extra, were it not for ZUN's crunch-time rush which left the game with a few bugs (namely one reporting a 1cc incorrectly).  My in-game menu reports all routes have been 1cc'd, but unfortunately that was after I learned you should choose "return to menu" instead of "restart and retry" to avoid said bug.

Ah well, I believe I have said enough for now even if you cared to read so much already--so, ARCENGAMERS, what have you say about TOHO?

--

SAY!  Final word spellcard here, but anyone interested in some PoFV netplay?

Heh.

With all the CoN stuff coming out, I've been pretty much playing only AI War recently, but on average, Touhou gets the 2nd most playtime from me.

I'm actually working on Shoot the Bullet at the moment, although I should go back and actually 1cc Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil. Got Remilia to 25% life on her final spellcard (normal) so I can do it, just need a couple more good tries.

I'm really looking forward to the extra stage with Flandre Scarlet, hence my forum avatar. For those who don't play Touhou, the extra stage is the super hard bonus stage you unlock by doing a 1cc (no continues) run of the main game. Youtube link for reference. The youtube link is only normal difficulty, there's Hard and Lunatic difficulties if you really want.

Here's Stage 6 on Lunatic difficulty from Touhou 10, it lives up to the billing of lunatic.

I myself don't ever play about normal difficulty. Well, I did try hard once, didn't clear stage 1.  ::)

Haven't tired the new game, Touhou 12.8 yet, waiting on the english patch.

I've also started playing the 3rd party games from the fandom. Maristice is getting some playtime from me these days too. It's a isometric puzzle platformer thing.

Oddly enough, I actually started toying with Touhou way back when Perfect Cherry Blossom (Touhou 7) came out, although it's not until only last year that I started getting into the fandom beyond the games themselves.

Either way, if you are into twitch games and don't mind a serious challenge I do recommend Touhou.

I'm not kidding on that challenge part, if you can complete stage 1 on normal in any Touhou game the first time you see it, you're doing better then I did.

D.

edit: Note that it is a Japanese game. If you want to play you'll have to download the Japanese demo, then apply the English patch.

#Dazio:  I would say I'm the same, as if it's not AI War or TOHO I'm usually web surfing.

Warning!  Spoilers below...

StB huh?  How far have you gotten into the game?  I should get back to that too, I'm on level 10 with fun ol' Komachi and herr Yamaxanadu, minimal clearing the game once I realized how terribly difficult it gets later on (Seamless ceiling is always HORRIFYING)...

ZUN, you had better not re-introduce this one into the next Shoot the Bullet (oh wait he did)!

I found everything below level five fine, and level six and seven were relatively easy (most shots were cleared).  Level nine was a pain to get past at first; managed to clear the minimal three shots to get to next level.

This was probably the only spellcard in level six I was not able to capture for some reason.
I hate those smaller bullets.

Probably one of the more difficult ones up to level six.

At least ZUN includes some easier spellcards once in a while.

Ran's level eight spellcards were an indication of the nightmare to follow.

This... was a horrible spell card; most of level nine was crazy.

Then level 10 came and I realized I totally sucked.

Always get to the last two shots and then I die.  Tough card that I like to practice on.

Hello--wait, why are you throwing so many coins at me!?

I don't even know what this is.

Prithee, Dazio, I hope you have played Double Spoiler too, unless you refer to that Shoot the Bullet.  I have actually had the luck in reaching the end!  ZUN using the MoF engine was another bonus to StB gameplay.

Heh, best of luck on 1ccing EoSD, I'm sure you will do it, and meet your girl!  :D
I thought extras didn't have their own difficulty; they were usually around the usual lunatic difficulty.

I can say that the English patch for The Great Fairy Wars is currently underway; they already have translated most of the images and manual, so I would say all they have to do now is copypasta the translations from the wiki and then verify everything.  I'm sure you will have fun with GFW, unless you plan on playing anything above normal, though not because of the new "revenge bullets".

Oh wow, you're an elderly member of the community!  Lucky to have started somewhere, I was playing the games subsequently (failing to 1cc) and then suddenly I began to beat the games from UFO to SA, etc., and then I played the PC98 games and I was like... NO FOCUSED MOVEMENT!?  Those older games also didn't help me spot the bullets any easier--I couldn't see a thing!

#Frozen:  TH05?  Mystic Square, a PC98 game?

Noted.

Ya, Double Spoiler is on the list to play.

It's release made me realise I'd never touched Shoot the Bullet so I started on that to relieve my frustration with ESoD.

Oh, didn't know the Extra stage didn't have different difficulty levels as I have yet to see it. I've just seen people talking about them as if they did.

Good to hear the 12.8 english patch is on the way, I'm looking forward to that.

And for something from the fandom instead of from the games themselves, it's where my avatar comes (and is the same link that's in my sig).

Bad Apple

This video is by some random person in the Touhou fandom and shows how huge the Touhou phenomenon is.

Heh, best of luck on the StB series, it can be a nightmare sometimes, but it's nice you don't have to restart the entire game because you messed up.

Bad Apple screensaver.  Download is in the video details.

TH5 = Touhou 5

i Don't Think you Were THAT Clueless Enough to know that TH means Touhou , Either way , i'll just leave it as it is.

The Revenge Bullets are BS , it's a equvalent of the Crit Rocket(or as i Mostly Say , CRIT RAWKET) , Don't Sent me a Lawsuit

I was referring to the fact that you are playing Mystic Square, a PC98 game;  perhaps you have the game number wrong as most people play 6-12.8.

I would take that cLuElEsS attitude elsewhere if you plan to insult people like that.

It wouldn't actually surprise me if he's playing Mystic Square.

I went and dug an emulator up to run them just because myself.....

And no, I don't recommend bothering to do so. I wouldn't even call them 8-bit games, more like 4-bit games in their feel.

Having said that, it depends on how he's counting the games. TH5 is Mystic Square in the online Touhou Community, but if he's just counting the windows games I supposed it could be Shoot the Bullet or Mountain of Faith also.

>_>

Yes, the PC98 games were uh, seizure-rific in their own way.  Shall I never return to them again unless I want the story and such, or understand more of ZUN's background (I did a quick skim over all of them; they were -okay-).

So, what level (or is it stage) are you on with Shoot the Bullet?

Umm, I think stage 4. It's actually on my other computer so I can't check at the moment.

It's Keine's second or third stage, once I get 4 pictures the laser pattern gets so dense that I lose track of it all and promptly get hit.

Actually, just went and looked it up, stage 3-6. Wiki's are wonderful things.

Stage in question for people who don't already think I'm nuts for playing these games.  ;D
(Hmmm, that vid I just linked shows an alternate strategy I haven't tried....)

One of my hangups though is that I refuse to skip a stage. Took me probably less then 50 shots to do stage 3-1 through 3-5 and I'm over 200 shots on my failed 3-6 attempts already.

I think I'm going to go back to ESOD for a while though, my frustration level with that has come down enough I think I can make that final push to 1cc it.

Well, and finish my current AI war game. Both AI homeworlds are found and I own systems 2 hops from both of them so I'm almost there.

We'll see, already looking at a busy weekend so not sure how much gametime I'll get.

My advise for that particular level is to take the shot when the lasers and blue bullets are in your direction; if you need to spare some room from the bullets, move back a bit but be careful of the lasers too.  That strategy is curious, as I did mine straight in the middle of Keine (which would also help with scoring, if that matters)!  It's been a long time since I've played those stages, though!

Yeah, I am a completion myself too, but I hope you won't do that for the future levels, as they get horrific!
ZUN I HATE/LOVE YOU!

Mufufu~ again, I wish you luck with EoSD, though a steady practice equates to better rate of success (unless, well, AI War had danmaku, then I would be ecstatic)!  Oh, and the same with your AI War chronicles that I see you take much effort in documenting.  ;)

Wow, really?

Sakuya's first non-card game overs me? (ESOD Stage 5 mid boss, just after her entrance.)

This is going to be painful.  :'(

I believe you can "lame" that non-spellcard by going above her; stay close to her if you want some nice grazing opportunity (unless I have the attack wrong).
