It's honestly the fact that if you say "Just ignore the trolls and negativity" you simply have not experienced a shitstorm aimed in your direction.

Pretty much this. Until you've experienced it, you cannot appreciate how difficult it is to deal with it.

I think everybody has experienced that at least once in their life. Most people have probably experienced it many times. Nobody is immune to criticism or bodies of criticism.

That's not an excuse to not take responsibility for your own emotional well-being. I completely agree, it isn't easy to do, but neither is staying physically healthy and fit either; that isn't an excuse to become obese.

Aye, this.   Been there, done that, more than people would know or than I'd let on.

Nobody likes having to go through something like that, nobody SHOULD have to go through something like that, but it happens.  And the important thing isnt what THEY do during it.... it's what YOU do during it.  If you give in to it all, they win, simple as that.

Right now, he seems WAY too worried about what others think of him.  Which, honestly, you cant really do in his position.  It kinda reminds me of that whole thing with Phil Fish, actually.  The guy that made Fez.  He makes this game that so many people even just liked the IDEA of that screenshots and info and rumors were being passes around for like forever before the game even came out.  And it comes out, and is very much loved by many of the people that had looked forward to it.  It apparently lived up to the hype it had gotten.   In other words, the guy had successfully created a truly great thing that deserved all the praise.

......so then what happens?  A few random trolls on Twitter cause the guy to ENTIRELY CANCEL the planned sequel.  Let's think about this for a second.... this is a game that people had been very eager to get their hands on, and a game that, when it came out, really DID live up to what it was said to be.  Reviewers loved it, players loved it, people used a gazillion words saying so.  But the moment the developer runs into a few negative jerks, it's all over.  He lets THEM win, and it ruins him.  He didn't stop to think, wait a minute, what do these guys know, I've already heard 10 gazillion times from people about what a great game I made!  Instead it's immediately "Oh no, it's true, everyone everywhere hated it and they hate me, I better just quit now".

That example is a little extreme, because of his NEAR INSTANT giving in to the trolls, but it shows the point I'm making here.  You've got to be able to resist those jerks.  And this goes double for someone in Totalbiscuit's position.... heck, you go anywhere NEAR that sort of position, you better already know in advance that this sort of crap IS going to come your way, no matter how bloody wonderful you are, because there ARE people out there that only want to see you suffer for their amusement.  You have to know this, so that you can say "Oh, those guys saying that crap at me?  Yeah, I just ignore them.  They're idiots, and not worth even a second of my time."   Stuff like that.

Furthermore a content creator like TB is somewhat reliant on the feedback that fans actually give in order to adapt his channel and videos according to the needs of his viewers. He can't just ignore everything or else his channel won't survive that long.

QFT. It's the same in real life. Enough is enough.

Yes, that's quite true.

The problem:  There's a BIG difference between constructive feedback..... aka, the type that you should actually listen to, the sort of feedback we all see right here on these very forums all the time during testing..... and mean jackassery, which is the bit that's bothering him so much, and the bit that you SHOULDNT ever listen to.   Comments like "Wow, you suck, your channel sucks, why dont you quit making videos forever" are not "feedback".  They're some asshat being a useless twit.  If you DONT ignore that type of jerk, then you end up in TB's current condition, all stressed out and aggravated and hating every second of it.  And when you let that happen, you've played right into their hands, and the vicious cycle begins.

I had the very unpleasant experience of receiving a full frontal assault of "internet-shitstorm" last year, when casually commented on that fighting games have very sexualised female characters, and TotalBiscuit replied, disagreeing. I got completely ransacked for about a week by angry internet kids that sent me emails, twitterposts, direct messages and youtube messages telling me just how "retarded" I was and how I should "kill myself" and what a "f*cking whiteknight" I was and how I shouldn't "expect to get laid" for saying that. For that week, not a single one of my uploaded videos on Youtube had more than 10% likes. I was being "dislike-bombed" by the Internet justice brigade.

Now, that was just a single week. I could survive that, even though it was extremely taxing dealing with all that crap every day. Now imagine ALWAYS living with it. Nope.

I can totally believe this.

It's on thing to say that you shouldn't take such things personally, but there is a point with trolls where they disturb you on a whole other level. Not because you believe what they say, but because they begin to shake your faith in humanity. If an alien race's first impression with us comes with reading Internet comments, they'll probably just blow up the planet as a service to the rest of the universe.

I wonder if TB is ever embarrassed by the actions his fans take on his "behalf."
Probably very often.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

This is exactly why I always keep my true e-mail address (among other things) seperate from the derpage of sites like Youtube and similar place.   Less stupidity to delete that way, when things occur.

....though, on the note of Youtube, I'd love to just seperate myself from it's glitchtastic idiocy entirely, but.... that's a whole other bag of cats.  And probably a 10 page rant.

I have seven email addresses, each with different purposes. Who you are depends on what email you get.

Oh, no disrespect is meant, of course.

Besides, I wouldnt give advice that I dont use myself.  On an extremely frequent basis.  There's a reason why I know that this can work, but I'll not go into that.

As always though, I'll speak my mind regardless of what anyone thinks.   Nobody has to agree with me, but I'll bloody well say stuff anyway.
