Three weeks from yesterday, Sept. 20, 2012.

I bought this on pre-order months ago. So, I'm excited for this, even if I will likely be too busy to play much. :)

I got it on preorder too, even though the mac version isn't going to be released immediately, it came with torchlight 1 when you preorder so I've been playing around with that. Pretty enjoyable, though I have some complaints about the skills not feeling satisfying enough - I played an archer and felt like all I needed to do was put all my points in ricochet shot, critical hit, and bow damage.

Still, excited to see how torchlight 2 is. Anybody played the beta that can say how satisfying the skills are?

I played the beta and have followed the game pretty closely.  I would say that the skills are much better now, and they have even made substantial changes to the skills since beta.

I see that they are going into direct competition with borderlands 2.
And since Torchlight 1 was quite boring for me.. choice is clear :D

Torchlight 1 released the same week as Borderlands 1 back in 2009 and went on to sell millions of copies.  Runic has nothing to worry about.

For me the first part was actually a bit.. monotonous.
From what I can see they improved this in 2.
They not competing directly with Borderlands thats for sure - game types are a bit different.

I'd say give both Torchlight 2 and Borderlands 2 their own chances. They both look amazing. The problem is, with the unpolished, lacking nature of Torchlight 1, that might have given the game a bit of a bad name. That's comparable like, to Borderlands multiplayer. The biggest thing people cite when they say "Item based games need strict DRM!" is Borderlands and the huge hacking scene within it. I love Borderlands and all, I've completed probably... 13 playthroughs maybe. But, I still blame it for that a little bit.

Basically what I'm saying is you're probably gonna play Borderlands 2 online even though people hacked in loads of gear, so Torchlight 2 should be given its fair chance even if TL1 was a bit experimental and lacking.
...although I still loved modded TL1...

Edit: If you couldn't tell I'm super excited about both and when I have a new computer, will probably play both in the double digits of playthroughs! =D

Torchlight 2 allows modding, sooo it's basically free reign to hack - and even encourages it. That's not necessarily a bad thing, I guess if you really like the trading with strangers or PvP aspects it's not so great though.

I think that most people want to play SP and LAN anyways with these kind of games.

Personally I don't care about hackers. I don't play public games anyway. I'd prefer to play with like-minded individuals who I'm already comfortable around. I'd say friends, but no real life friends I have really love the same games I do.... As much as I try to get em to buy AVWW and AI War and play with me. :p
So yeah, most of my borderlands was solo. Game's fun based on its own merits, what can I say? But yeah, that's why I don't care for cheat prevention. I like modding. I don't like to play by enforced rules when I'm going solo all the time anyway.

This is really not that relevant to me anyway though. I've got my Torchlight 2 preorder, which is great and all, but my computer's gotten to the point that idle processes crash from time to time. Nobody knows or cares enough to help, that I know personally. I was thinking about starting a thread to get people to help me figure out what's wrong and get a throwaway part so I at least can do computer stuff for school. But yeah, these aren't the boards for that. So, video game discussion it is!

A chap named Lothario (with a little, "That's not brutal enough - try this," from me) put together a custom class - the "Kensai" - which can't use healing potions and has a core-skill-with-modifiers skill tree, which you might find a little different. Also, a sword in one hand and a gun in the other is a totally viable, so there's that.

Thanks, I'll check it out Zebra, sounds interesting. As for the topic of cheating/modding, I should say that the cheating doesn't bother me, as its not really the sort of game I play competitively or even with randoms at all.

If you are a betting type I bet that it won't be released on this day. Because it used to be End of July, then  Summer and now this. I have absolutely no faith in this new promise. However frustrating is Blizzard's "when it's ready" it's more honest.

While I understand your sentiment, I'll point out a couple things:

1.) Runic has been open about their process lately, explaining why things took as long as they did, and going through what they were doing each week to complete the game.

2.) Runic has never given an exact release date to this point. It was always "July" or "End of Summer". This is the first time that they've ever said "On THIS date". Plus, with reading their "Not a blog" feature on their forums, it had been apparent for a few weeks that they really were getting close.
