Forgive the double post but UnReal World has moved away from their paid licensing model into a donations supported free distribution model to speed up development. It's a really cool and unique roguelike that focuses on wilderness survival in a world based on iron age Finnish folklore. It's an open ended sandbox where you can hunt, trap, forage, craft, trade, build, fight or whatever else you can figure out. It comes with a tileset and some funky and endearing digital photos of the dev and his friends running around in the woods. The interface is pretty easy to get around in, with some limited mouse functionality.

I've been playing it on and off for a while and it's pretty cool. Nothing like a game where you can break your leg falling out of a tree and then freeze to death trying to drag yourself to safety.

Isn't it an ancient game? I did not realized it was still alive let alone being developed!

Yeah, it's been around in one form or another for something like twenty years. It's crazy.

So, I think at this point Sword of the Stars: The Pit needs to be mentioned. It's a roguelike set in the Sword of the Stars universe. I've played it twice now, it's a lot of fun. It's obviously sci-fi and not fantasy based, but there is a good bit of crafting, lots of stats to level up, and MAN is it tough.

You can see TotalBiscuit playing it here, if you haven't seen his video yet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qstolOa_jA

Is it reasonably stable, balanced (in the sense that roguelikes ever are), and otherwise in no way resembling the launch debacle of SotS 2?

I know it's a totally different genre and game and so on, but with that developer I really have to ask :)

It is quite stable, as far as I can tell. I've not had a crash. Nor did TB, according to his video.

As for balance, it's tough, maybe a bit too scarce on weapons, but, not too crazy out of balance.

And no, it's NOTHING like SotS2. :)

It looks somewhat rogue-like, so just going to stick it in here. Though I'm not sure how much it really is a rogue-like.

Anybody tried Don't Starve? It looks interesting. Curious what people that have played it think.

Don't Starve is a game about chasing rabbits and failing trapping rabbits in traps, or birds (though if you're fast enough you can catch birds just by standing armed atop some seeds), and after you figure out how to do the title (or before if you're unlucky or too slow), is more roguelikeish and fighty.

The world doesn't change unless you remake one everytime, though.

But... Is it fun? Heh.

I picked it up from the humble store anyways, and it apparently came with a second copy but I've not had the chance to delve into it yet. If you've played it much, let me know if its fun or just gets tedious!

I'm a bit surprised to see no mention of DoomRL. Yes, that Doom got remade as a top-down, turnbased roguelike. It is significantly faster paced than "The Pit", with very significant leveling 'perks' - you don't upgrade individual skills or stats. You don't have item identification, but you do have a very limited inventory, permadeath, ammo is your 'food' mechanic. You have an actual strafing mechanic (though you're not forced to use it.

DoomRL started out as a 'coffee-break' roguelike, but has seen more depth.

The last couple of releases have been pretty huge. 0.9.9.6 came out February of last year, introduced a 'class' system (marine, scout, technician) with very different skill builds and master traits available (e.g. Marine pistol build uses dual pistols, fires in bursts, while the Scout pistol build gives you a guaranteed sidestep dodge plus other benefits. The varying master traits also tend to lock out some of the lower skills, i.e. marines are often locked out of Hellrunner, while the Technician can (almost?) always unlock the Whizkid trait to do extra weapon modification, special assemblies, and the scout is almost always a fast mover, though there is a chainfire build focused around seeing the enemy and shooting them before they can see you. It also introduced a complete graphical tileset by Derek Yu (he gets around), with full mouse support, and several new bosses. It has always had excellent music.

Version 0.9.9.7 came out on March 19th. It includes new challenges, new special levels, improved level generators, new monster ais, and an online modserver.

I just discovered this game today, as well as Brogue. Both are highly enjoyable. http://www.freeindiegam.es/2013/03/86856527-michael-brough/

I played don't starve for a few hours today. It was pretty enjoyable roaming around trying to survive, slaughtering and trapping rabbits to eat. Burned down a beehive hoping it would net me something, but no luck. Tried the same on a spider nest... and well, it didn't go so well. Then finally I made the science structure, and its like discovering a whole another game behind it! So many facets there to unlock, looks like it could have some depth to it.

Fun times, though I do somewhat worry the mundane part of surviving and making it back to home camp etc might start to feel like a grind.

Ouch, this is a tough one.

My best run is 2 zones and 9 points. I should be better at it because it's pure logic, but crap its hard.
