Tales of Maj'Eyal (ToME)
« on: November 27, 2014, 06:15:41 pm »
Since the old thread was almost 2 years old, and the topic was taking over a different thread, here's a new ToME thread.

Mostly because I want to ask about the expansion.  It sounds interesting, but it also seems to have little content.  Supposedly it's more of a preview for also the stuff that will come in a much larger expansion "soon".  Does it have enough content to make it worth re-buying the already-free base game so I can also buy the expansion?
Or should I just wait to see if the next big Orc expansion (with gun-saws) is more interesting?

Features:
Start with a new class, the Doombringer! [Snip]

Unlock a new class, the Demonologist, with an all-new item enhancement mechanic! [Snip]

Two new zones, with all-new art, foes, and bosses! [Snip]

Over 10,000 words of written lore to find! [Snip]

Unlock a new race, Doomelves: Shalore [Snip]

Between the aforementioned classes and Doomelves, a whopping 75 new talents!

Unlock two new cosmetic options! [Snip]

Two new events, appearing anywhere in Eyal!

20 new artifacts, with unique and interesting effects. [Snip]

7 new achievements! [Snip]

Also buying the game on Steam is considered donating so you get the donator stuff.

Items Vault
For each 2€ of donations you gain one slot in the online Items Vault. This allows a character to send items to the vault and an other one to grab it from there. This feature can be accessed through the Fortress ingame.
I bought the game on steam and I got access to 10 slots.

10€ for all of that might sound like a bit much. But I really like the game and wanted to support the developer so I think it was worth it. The free base game has more content than a lot of the AAA games. There's garbage being sold for 60€. I'd say go ahead. Especially now that it's on sale

Doombringer is by far my favourite class, since I've always been fond of melee/mobility/pyromaniac builds. Pretty much made Arcane Blades obsolete for me. I would say, however, that Doombringer is admittedly a little overpowered. Demonologists on the other hand are in dire need of some buffs. The whole demon lore you get to read is very interesting, although there are lots of parallels to Orc lore. The new artefact items have some nice effects, too!

I donated earlier, donated again to buy the expansion, then donated again because I liked it so much.

But that's only because the way TOME takes out some of the micro-managing and RNG-dependence of classical roguelikes and replaces it with tactical combat and customisation just really clicks with me. Roguelike purists may not like it, and even beyond that there's a lot of questionable design choices in TOME...but still, I recommend it to anyone. It's free. And the donator-only content is actually neither overpriced nor bad.

I'm confused about the expansion. On the website, it looks like you get the expansion for free when you download the game's current build. However, on steam, it's looks like it sold separately, and that you are not getting the latest build. Can someone clarify?

I want to play it first before I donate.

The expansion is NOT available for free. You unlock it with a special currency you receive by donating.

My brain tries to grasp this game (from watching Let's Plays) but all I'm getting is a headache. This game seems rather steep on the learning curve, yes?

It actually has a very low learning curve for a Rogue-like.  The biggest "learning" to be done is becoming familiar with all the various abilities that monsters can have, which is pretty easy because the player can also get them all.
Additionally, if you buy the game/donate, you unlock "Exploration Mode" which has infinite lives.  Makes bumbling through the game easy, even when you don't know what you are doing.
Finally, there's a Wiki that has almost all the info you'll need, including a number of guides.  Some are out of date, but many are still good enough.

The learning curve really is nothing compared to games like DF. :-)
