Judging from the trailer 'Rhythm violence' seems to be a pretty good description.
I just read about this on RPS (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2015/03/09/how-thumper-made-a-lot-of-people-very-uncomfortable/), who say that it made the audience at the GDC feel very uncomfortable. There seems to be no actual violence in the game - just a car going down a fixed track, with standard rhythm game design - but all the actions, visuals and sounds manage to bring up a sense of... violence (I want to put in a synonym, but can't think of any).
I was just thinking the other day that it would be cool to see more unpleasant games. Not games that deal with unpleasant issues, stories or whatever - we're doing ok there - but games that just feel horrible to play, the game equivalent of the harsher ends of noise, jazz & modern classical (speaking of which, one of the devs is the bassist from Lightning Bolt). Hopefully this is a start :D

I never got into the whole business of
- Watching horrible movies
- Listening to drum'n'bass
- Smoking
- Bashing my head against a wall
- Doing unpleasant things for fun
and I still don't get it.
Also, people seem to be playing up the violent aspect of Thumper a bit too much. Seems to be more clever presentation and mass hysteria than actual qualities of the game itself.
