The Polyphasic Project
« on: July 15, 2012, 06:26:32 pm »
So tomorrow is my first day of a four week vacation, and the first day of "The Polyphasic Project™"

I will attempt the Uberman sleep cycle for four weeks and see if I can achieve a polyphasic lifecycle. Wish me luck! I will, if I can, video document the project wether I succeed or fail.

While I'm sure this is possible, it doesn't seem like a very good idea.  The long-term health risks of this kind of radical sleep deprivation haven't been fully observed.  If you're just doing it to see if you can I wish you the best, but maybe you should stop after your vacation ends ;p

Richard Buckminster Fuller (the inventor of the Uberman cycle) himself lived like this for several years without any detectable health problems. I also don't intend to make this a long going project. It's mostly just !!SCIENCE!!

Reminds me of summer vacations during pre-college years where I'd play games or read or whatever for about 26 hours, pass out for about 10-12, games/read another 26, etc...  probably not the most healthy thing I could have done ;)

Nowadays if I stay up regularly past midnight I get sick.  Sigh.

Hahah, that sounds distinctively bad, yeah. Polyphasic sleep is more like "reordering" your sleep phases to only sleep REM-sleep which is the most beneficial for the mind and body. No doctor has yet to find any direct harmful effects by it, but one should also be aware that almost all research that has been done on the subject has been by laymans and not real scientists.

Regardless, it'll be a fun project.

A better use of your time would be lucid dreaming. In short, become a psychonaut.

A friend and I once stayed up for 48 hours straight.

The results were... unusual, to say the least!

What would be left as motivation to wake up then.....

If you actually try 2h a day of sleep you will quickly notice what real sleep deprivation is and why it's called torture ;) Because once you stop, you won't be able to healthily sleep for a week. And this period is about the worst thing ever. Because nothing absolutely NOTHING is worse than being dead-tired, wanting to sleep, not being able to.

Yeah, the "run-in" period is the worst I hear. Day 4-10 around. No quality sleep for a week. You're in a zombie state.

The AI has made a note of this.

I myself think he's a bit crazy doing this but hey, what do I know? ;)

Good luck!

Your statement implies that Fox is not already crazy, therefore your argument is invalid ;)
