Terraria
« on: June 07, 2011, 04:34:00 am »
So folks mentioned Terraria here http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,8631.0.html

Since, it's not really about game development, I'm opening this new topic.

Guys, if you liked this game, can you tell me something... I don't really like minecraft because I can't get over the look and also vastness of the world. Terraria in this respect is much more appealing to me because it's prettier and does not look that infinite. So... I'd like to like Terraria, but there is something that preventing me doing this, probably I'm doing something wrong. There are two main things that currently put me off:

- There is basically nothing to do at night on the early stage of the game, as I can't craft because I've crafted everything I could with materials that I have. There is also no way that I found to increase speed. So I just need to sit and wait until the night is gone, I can't even switch to another app as in this case time stops in the game. So I sit at home, as I can't fight off zombies and eyes and wait for the night to end.

- During the day it's virtually impossible to concentrate on doing something, as very quickly a slug would come around and start biting at you. It is not that difficult to fight it off, but it takes some time, causes interruption and in half a minute another slug comes around. So instead of digging, collecting resources etc you need to fight off these annoying monsters every couple dozen seconds. This is way annoying.

There are raving communities out there in internet, claiming that the game is just great. I clearly must be missing something.

Can you share your experience?

Yeah, the mobs are annoying at first but once you start to get better equipment, you can fight them off quicker. Also, you can mine stuff and fight of enemies because the tools do do some damage to enemies though fairly little at first. Also, I tend to spend a lot of time mining underground which, while doing at night, you don't really have to deal with the zombies and eyes.

Either mine at night, or go out and look for fallen stars. Collect 10, craft a star that gives you mana. You end up needing mana for gear you'll find later on. The slimes on the surface during the daylight are pretty easy to fight off, or you can wall yourself up with a stack of dirt. If you put it as high as you can reach without jumping, they won't be able to jump over it.

As far as why people like it, it's kind of like Minecraft with goals. You dig for ore to craft better armor to fight bigger monsters and then you wander into the corrupted areas of the world and summon boss monsters to fight and you get better gear there and then you fight the dungeon door keeper and get in there for more goodies. It's a hybrid of your traditional loot-based RPG and light minecraftish elements. For those that just like to play Minecraft on peaceful and build big pretty decorations, this doesn't scratch that itch as much, although you can make some pretty neat looking 2-D houses. But for those who played Minecraft for a week, got some diamond gear and built a nether portal and then said 'what do I do now? I'm bored!' this may be the game for you.

It sounds like it will work. I'll try this, thank you!

Yes, it's definitely more bearable right now, I've even managed to mine into a lake and flood all my shafts by accident. Fun! =)

Ok, so now at night these worms appear and almost insta-kill me. Any way to defend from them?

Minecraft with boss monsters. Terraria actually has some goals for the player, where Minecraft is more about a giant sandbox.

If they're the little tiny ones that only appear underground, your pickaxe is generally more than enough to deal with them without even stopping mining.  If they're the medium-sized ones (devourers), hit them with your sword.  If that doesn't work, you're going to need a bigger sword.  And armor.  Lots of armor.  Made from the best material you can find.  They have an unfortunate tendency to pass through any and every type of wall, so your only hope is really to just kill them or not hang out by the corruption where they spawn.  If they're the really, really big boss ones, then you're just screwed and have to kill them, or they'll never ever leave you alone.  Those ones are kind of jerks for a while until you get much better equipment.

Worms at night.. ? Maybe more like large eye ?
You can trigger http://wiki.terrariaonline.com/Eye_of_Cthulhu by destroying shadow orb and he seemed to re-spawn every night until defeated.

On taht Wiki you can find good way to fight it - basically large area with platforms plus something to shoot it with.

I'm that far in yet. It's just your garden variety worms. I actually found that while they kill you easily, you one-hit kill them too. So it's a less of problem for me now. Now I'm trying to find enough iron / silver for some better armour. It seems that iron is incredibly scarce. (Or I'm not deep enough).

It depends heavily on what size your world is.  In a large world, you can go a long time without seeing much if you're unlucky.  In a small world on a good day, you practically trip over gold and silver the minute you step off your spawn point.  The amount of resources seeded in the world does not scale up anywhere near as fast as the size of the world does.  That can be good or bad, depending on how quickly you like to play and how much exploring you like to have to do.

Anyone interested in multiplayer/viewing other people's worlds? I would be curious to compare.

Just got Terraria for myself actually.

It is a nifty game, a bit tiresome to dig all around in th dirt if you wanna go explore caves, but I like the concept.

I am kind of regretting making a large world, its so far down to the nifty magma layers and the good metals, but I need thoose metals for my armor and weapons so I can survive ;P

Lol, I wonder what happened here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=399999856732587&set=a.400043270061579.90569.149488785117030&type=1&theater

Given that the team broke-up and started on other project, what is this about? Somebody bought the IP and decided to milk some more money out of fanbase?
