Well, the studio still owns the IP, so they're free to do whatever they want with it. But it's was pretty pointless making a giant bro-hahah when they were going for a console port. I mean, 100% of their audience is PC players at this point, so why the huge teaser when it has literally 0% with us to do?

There are fringe cases where the port is useful even for PC users. Those with a Playstation Vita, for example, could have a more portable version of it then a laptop (although tablets are close already).

Just because the whole market is on PC today doesn't mean it is doomed to consoles. I have a step brother who never touched minecraft until it was on XBOX, now he's addicted to it.

Porting to consoles may not be as sexy as porting to Mac or Linux, but the potential market is much greater.
Life is short. Have fun.

If I recall, Runic Games mentioned that by porting Torchlight to consoles they learned a lot of things that let them optimize it more, which effected what they could do in Torchlight 2.

Porting to consoles is a good move for more revenue given that it's sold well already and suits consoles fairly well.  And it's also fairly big news to console gamers because it is a fun game.

But not really big news to most of the existing fanbase, probably.

Part of the problem really is that Redigit is just bad at PR. He's openly admitted this at least twice, and it kinda shows, here. I got all excited over the teaser, because I kept thinking in terms of other companies who are much better at it. Companies that have their own PR staff, and big teams, and all this, that's what I was thinking of. But, well, I'm not too upset.
I have heard that the whole port thing might have new content exclusive to the consoles. If it's exclusive to the consoles, I have reason to actually be upset about it. Not only is the news not relevant to us, it means we're getting shafted as well. I guess not too terribly, because I did get something like 180 hours out of Terraria, but it's not something I'd just let happen, if that makes any sense. So, the moment that I hear there is no extra content, or that the content is coming to PC, I'll be happy. Otherwise, I'm just completely neutral to the idea. PC's got modding and custom maps. I don't need no console version.  8)

I think it's awesome news.

It's not surprising however. And I also don't care about the exclusive content. In fact I hope they DO add some. It'll have the market pick it up. More Terraria sales means we'll hopefully see whatever they have in store for us next faster. Heck, he's probably not even doing much work on the port himself.

I would be really surprised if the extra content didn't eventually come back to pc...as an expansion.

I'm not sure to make of the "teaser". It came out in November, and this announcement certainly doesn't me lead to think the trailer was made for this announcement. So I am guessing one of three things happened:

1) The trailer was made in November for some sort of improved / expanded content, that later was dumped. They don't want to clarify how the expanded content and the ports are (un)related
2) The trailer was made in November and the improved / expanded content is being made, but the approval for the game on consoles arrived before the improvements were finished, so the company is pursuing that first.
3) The trailer made in November and said improved content will arrive via consoles first, and later ported back into the main game

Or I'll add the 4th one that regrettably could be true...
4) The person in charge of PR is an idiot and has no clue

I wouldn't mind if the expanded content started out first on the consoles if two things happen:
1) The game on consoles costs more for whatever reason
2) The difference in price from the console to the PC version is charged as an expansion.

So basically if the game is in essence comes with an expansion built it in, and the pc eventually gets access to it, then I would be fine for eventually the two are on equal terms.

I have no problems with PC games getting console ports, but to tease that on us, the PC player base, and then say that the console-version is getting extra content with no mention of PC players getting the same, is a bit of a slap in the face. He should have better common sense. That's not a PR skill.

Where would he put the teaser if not on computers? No indie game can afford mainstream advertising.

Maybe its because I was a console owner before I started seriously playing pc games, and this nature of the disparity of pc ports and console ports as always occurred until very recently, but I'm not jumping the gun and saying this is bad yet.

Just because he has not said yet the pc game game will get the extra content doesn't mean they won't. And extra content could mean anything, including simply skins.

We can agree there is no pr skill though. It would help to say "pc content coming too!" to avoid this whole fiasco.

That's not even what I meant by PR. I meant the whole idea of such a big announcement being made for all of us... a primarily PC-based community... then the announcement being about a port to consoles. Now, if it was a port to iOS and Android, that would be fairly nifty. Portable Terraria without a laptop sounds pretty amazing and relevant even to PC gamers.
...now... wait, what is this video from November that was posted? This trailer? I'm willing to bet it was the 1.1 trailer from around a year ago... but did I miss something?

I just went for the first "teaser" video on the main website. I don't know if something more recent was posted.

This wasn't that big of a tease. I don't get the anger. Why do you care if there's exclusive content somewhere else? Did you not enjoy the game at the price you paid?

Just be happy more people will get to enjoy a great game. There was "exclusive content" in the retail bundle, too. But it was fairly trivial. I assume they'll do the same on consoles.

I'm not really that mad about the exclusive content, but I reserve the right to be disappointed if the console version actually gets tangible perks to make it better than the PC version. Loyal fans bought the game for PC, they played the game on PC, and those fans should be able to get access to all of the content on PC. I wouldn't care if I had to pay for it as an expansion. I just think it should be on PC if it isn't just a cosmetic thing. New weapons, effects, spells, balancing, new blocks... all of that stuff will bother me. If it's just some exclusive texture pack or a remastered HUD, then I don't care.

@Chemical: This trailer? The one here? That one's around a year old, yeah. It was for a huge content patch that nearly doubled the amount of stuff in the game for free.

I'm not saying this is bad news. Or bad in any way. But had they just simply come out and say: "Terraria is on consoles" rather than teasing us, I wouldn't be as annoyed by the news. I would have said "cool" or something to that effect.
