That is exactly what I don't like about it. Microsoft proved themselves incompetent, or at least that they don't care about PC gamers, with GFWL already. I am not upgrading to Windows 8 if it means giving them more money and getting even worse service.  Nobody in their right mind would pay to get screwed as a PC gamer.

Yea, if Windows 8 does indeed have a mandatory "you can only get to digital-game-distribution through microsoft's store" thing (is that confirmed?) then I will never, ever install it on my machine.  I'm not kidding.  Never.  I'll hold on to Win7 until microsoft removes that absurdity from Win8, or releases Win9 without it, and if Win7 becomes untenable for some reason I'll just switch to linux or something like that.

Hopefully they aren't even going that far with it, though.

If it's actually going to be that way or not depends on the markets response, but the goal for Microsoft is to have a digital distribution store, similar to the Android Play Store or iOS AppStore for everything on your PC. Easily accessible, downloadble and updatable, all through one place: MS greasy palms. Will third party installations (outside of the store) be possible? Not if they get to decide, but they might be pressured to allow it regardless if they want Win8 to succeed.

Its not really clear, but with everyone looking at how Apple is starting to take over Mac OSX and Microsoft seems to following suit on this OS, there is a lot of worry that MS will lock it down. Maybe in the end that is an unjustified worry, but its hard not to put two and two together...

Its hard to say. We'll have to watch MS and see what they do. I'm not planning on upgrading either way because they are designing an OS for mobile devices on a non-mobile device. That right there is reason enough not to get it. You don't design software that doesn't work with the hardware. That's just stupid.
