Tapatalk?
« on: February 27, 2011, 02:26:11 am »
Chris/Keith,

Any chance of having Tapatalk (http://www.tapatalk.com/) enabled on the Arcen forums?

Having the ability to browse forum threads comfortably on a smartphone would be very much appreciated. Nothing like catching up on the latest AI War discussions whilst on the bus, waiting in a long queue, or hanging on to the last vestiges of sanity in a terminal business meeting...  :)

Thanks in advance for at least considering it (he says hopefully)!

I'm on my iPhone routinely (and right now) with no issues. But that thing is something we can look at at some point -- right now things are pretty hectic so ts not a good time, but next time there is a lull I'll definitely try to keep it in mind. I plan to update to smf 2.0 and I don't know if that includes that automatically anyway.

Interesting thing. Usually I just use my smartphone set up as wireless modem (gotta love HTC Desire) and connect my laptop to it when out travelling, but nifty when I do not have a laptop with me. :)

I browse from my Android a lot, and it works ok. Shows the posts just fine, although I have to scroll left and right if I want to see who posted what. But for just reading the posts, they all work fine.

Oh, I agree browsing is doable without it, but Tapatalk is much quicker (you're not having to load a full web page each time) and you don't have to worry about formatting issues (on my Android I can usually get a thread to word wrap posts to fit my smaller screen, but there are occasional posts which refuse to comply).

Anyway, thanks Chris for at least putting it on the 'someday/maybe' list - that's good enough for me.  :)

Hate to necro this thread, but any further thoughts on adding Tapatalk to the Arcen forums?

Makes browsing from a mobile phone soooo much pleasant, and doesn't look like too much of a hassle to install - http://www.tapatalk.com/activate_tapatalk.php?plugin=smf

I wasn't around when this was first brought up, so I can't compare directly, but, I can assure you, this isn't one of those "down times" he talked about. :) But, maybe I'll look into what is required and talk to Chris about it.

What is the advantage of this software? I'm on my iPhone right now, and daily write on the forums from my phone. Whenever other forums mention tapawhatever I just always hit cancel in annoyance, so I've never seen it in action. ;)

It's a native app interface for forums. On iPhone that means it'll look and operate in exactly the same fashion you'd expect any proprietary Apple app to work, basically.

Yeah, it basically makes the activity of using forums on a small mobile screen a lot more pleasant. No need to tap/zoom and hope the lines wrap correctly, really good image handling, etc.

As it stands now, browsing the Arcen forums on my mobile means having to tap/zoom to see the thread titles, clicking on one, tap/zooming again to read the actual thread but having to scroll left/right to see who wrote a particular post, etc. And even then, when you get to the bottom of a page the numbers you need to tap on to go to the next page of a thread are incredibly tiny - I usually have to zoom in even further (which is involves a two finger 'stretch' zoom rather than a simple double-tap) so that my big ol' thumb can hit the correct page number.

Plus all your subscribed threads a grouped together on a separate tab, etc so it just an overall easier experience for the user.

tigersfan - I wasn't suggesting this was one of those 'downtimes' (does Arcen even have those?  ;D) - just that I was stuck at the airport yesterday and the frustration of browsing this forum on my phone (compared to other forums like quartertothree which use tapatalk) was enough to prompt me to revive this old thread.

I'm not trying to make a big deal about it (I've survived this long without it!) but thought I'd raise the question again in the hopes that it might be a simple process to plug it in.  :)

For whatever it's worth, if this was available I would use it. I have browsed from my phone from time to time, and it's definitely more effort than it's worth half the time. Although I've never actually used the taptalk app, but if it just manages to vaguely format things for a mobile screen, that would be great.
