Let's Play Teaser feedback
« on: June 23, 2016, 07:56:42 am »
Youtube
Now, I don't know what people are after in a Let's play. But from this trailer/teaser thing, would you want to watch this? What are you feelings and thoughts? I'd like some feedback, because honestly, I've been doing my "own thing" for about 7-8 years and never really cared what people think. That got me about 550 subscribers. But perhaps it's time I put some goddamn effort into what I'm doing. I'm looking for feedback on whether this is effort in the right, or wrong, direction.

Everything in my videos is genuine. There is no fake screaming or overacting just for the sake of it. If I freak out, it's because I legit freaked out. Usually I don't.

I watch a lot of LPs myself.  A lot of them.  Since I don't get into TV and movies (too long, or too boring, or too stupid, as a rule, when I could just read books...) I end up just watching LPs most of the time.

And I have to say, it's bloody hard to find good LPers.  I don't follow the big guys much.  I've seen some of them, the only one I genuinely like is Markiplier; yeah, screams a lot, but I've done that myself (not for YouTube, or videos in general).  But then I also like a lot of smaller channels, some of which can also be kinda loud, others are more quiet and serious.  Or others are even more sarcastic and unpleasant (negative) than I am.  There's all sorts of styles, but for me what it comes down to is how invested the narrator is.

The thing that bugs me is, well... hmm.   Okay, ever heard of Game Grumps?  Cousin of mine loves them.  I tried watching them before... they cant stick to the damn subject.  If I'm watching an LP, or anything that's even remotely similar, I'd like it to continue being about the LP, not dwindle into some story about what some friend did at a McDonalds.   Seeing someone do that says to me that they're not REALLY invested in what they're doing.  Like they see it as just a job.  If they're not obviously enjoying the subject matter, neither am I.  Which is how I tend to feel about a lot of things (hell, it's how I approach Starward, or even just testing and such).

I'm good at getting things out of voices, probably as a result of my autistic tendencies.   Even from just the 1:30 of that video, I can hear the authenticity in what you're doing, so that's a pretty good start.  Nothing false there.  And I get the  impression that you're not the sort to get easily distracted by random things during something like this, that helps too.  You have a good start.  Other than that, as long as you pick the games that YOU want to play... instead of picking something because you think it's what others want... then yeah, I think it can go somewhere.

The problem though is getting attention.   I have no freaking bloody clue how anyone gets subscribers.  No clue.  I have 232 subscribers on my own channel.  Why?  Bloody hell if I know.  I can guess that a few of them might be there because of LBP videos I did awhile back but that only explains some.  The others?  I... don't know.  I barely even DO anything.  Usually I just put up videos of things like shmup replays or whatever, without narration, typically just to show to friends or whatever.  Just random and when I feel like it.  People still subscribe sometimes.  Doesn't make sense.

And then there's view count.  Most things I do put up get very few views.  This, to me, makes sense.  What doesn't make sense is the one that got over 200,000.  What is that?  A video of me screwing up an Isaac boss fight.  Like, 3 minutes long and then I stuck Yosemite Sam at the end, jumping up and down in anger, because why the hell not.  It was lazy and short and then it exploded.  Why?  I've never been able to figure it out.  I had to restrict comments on it after awhile because it was driving me crazy.  There's a few others that had somewhat loopy numbers, and they don't make much sense either.  How did anyone find any of them?

And that's what baffles me, and that's what I see as the problem a lot of Youtubers face:  What actually brings people to a channel or video, and then what keeps them there?   It's the bringing that's the hard part; keeping them there is just a matter of making sure your videos are constantly interesting.  But getting them NOTICED... how does that happen?  Why does one video explode, and another one just falls over with a whimper?  If you want to get a big channel going, get a real subscriber base, you'll have to figure that out.  All the effort in the world, going into the actual video creation process, means little if people don't notice and have a look in the first place.

Of course, if you simply don't care whatsoever about subscribers, then that stuff doesn't really matter.  But getting at least something of a subscriber base seems to be the typical goal, at least from what I've seen on there.  And I hate seeing good content creators stop what they're doing simply because they think nobody cares or is interested.  That really sucks.

Yeah, all of that is somewhat random rambling from me, and I've no idea if any of that helps or is even relevant, but feh, I rambled anyway, I do that.  It's the first thing I thought of, really.  Your narration style... or what I've heard of it anyway... sounds to me like you could make some pretty good stuff out of it.  For that aspect, frankly, I think you'll be fine.  The only thing to avoid is lulls in the talking.  Hard to do, that.  Seems hard to me, anyway.

As the "voice acting" bit goes, that's up to personal preference.  Some people get a kick out of that.  A few Youtubers I'm subscribed to will do that, others will moreso give their own responses as if they were there, or all sorts of things like that.  I say, if you enjoy doing that part... then go ahead and do it.  If you're having fun with it, chances are viewers will too, eh?   Granted, it depends on the type of game; some long-winded RPG with tons and tons of text?  Not good for the voice-acting.  But yeah, something like Shantae would work fine, I think.  It's not a Square-Enix cutscene festival.

Whatever you end up doing, have fun with it, and good luck.  I've often wanted to do something like that myself (and occaisionally I'd sorta start one, and then taper off quickly) but that'd end in derp... but it means I understand the appeal in doing so.  It could be a good time, yeah?

Ugh, can tell I'm running low on fuel here, bah.  If I keep going any further I wont make sense even to myself.  All in all, it seems like a good start, and sure, I'd have a watch, once you have something going.  Though it does depend on what game it is, in my case.   Even the funniest Youtuber in the universe couldn't stop me from falling asleep during an LP of a slow-moving stealth game, for instance.

That was actually more helpful than you think. You reflect a lot of my own thoughts in that. I'm not really THAT obsessed with "getting spotted". As long as people enjoy what I make, I'm generally fine. I am, however, trying to give something back to my viewers and try to not be too darn lazy about it.

II have a fair few videos that for one reason or another just EXPLODED with views. I have no idea why, but I can definitely understand why "the big" let's players are only playing the new and popular games. Make a video about those, and even a tiny channel like mine will get hundreds of thousands of views. I tend to not like modern games though so I'm not making videos about them because I can't keep then genuine. And then what's the point?
