SMITE

The original topic is about a year and a half old (since the last post).

Can one of you Smite fanatics tell me what this 3.7GB patch I'm downloading on Steam is please?

Any major improvements in the past year or so?

I've been wondering about this myself.... I aint touched it in ages, but I noticed that it appeared on Steam.  Maybe now is a good time to jump back in (probably with a new account?)

I was actually going to give it a try a few days ago, but.... been just a BIT distracted by other games here.

Is SMITE any good to play? Compared to Dota?
As a DotA aficionado myself, I've always thought Smite was the second best MOBA on the market. It's sort of a neat hybrid between a decent first person shooter (take your pick) and League of Legends. So much of a hybrid that even the viewpoint lies in-between those two extremes (overhead * first person = 3rd person). So it's possibly the most twitch-based MOBA on the market, if you're into that sort of thing.

I will say that it has the best lore by far, using the old polytheistic Gods of many ancient religions, and (from what I've observed) staying very true to their original mythology while also making them incredibly fun and bad ass to play. I just don't think the other games can really compete much in this regard, especially the game where SMITE seems to draw most of its inspiration from (League of Legends), whose heroes are a brutal and confusing mix of futuristic psychic warriors, ninjas, warlocks and witches, and girls with teddy bears (it's very schizophrenic). Even DotA has some really cool lore/design concepts but in this regard loses in my opinion.

Now as far as the hero DESIGNS themselves, well that's up for grabs. I personally think DotA has the best designs in terms of gameplay mechanics, and this is reflected in the popularity of the game as an e-sport and competitive title. But in terms of gameplay, SMITE has some pretty neat ideas too, once again I find the designs in terms of gameplay mechanics to be superior to LoL, the game it seems to pull most of its MOBA inspiration from. The only majorly annoying/bad character design mechanic I've noticed is that 8,000 of the characters have an ultimate which makes them fly up in the air, temporarily invincible, and perform some action for a set period of time before landing and becoming vulnerable again. Yes, I get it they are gods. Yes I know it fits with the theme. But as a mechanic it's absolutely horrific to deal with. Imagine if in DotA half the cast had an ultimate that made them invincible and untargettable for several seconds. That's basically how it feels.

One advantage of SMITE over DotA is that it has many more modes built-in right from the beginning (sharing this with LoL). In addition to conquest it's got a various list of interesting and exciting maps and gameplay modifications that give the player some other things to do if the competitive mode gets boring (such as ARAM).

Given that I keep comparing it to LoL, I will say it's a much superior iteration of the former. In addition to the fresh 3rd person perspective, and the neat hero lore and superior design concepts, the game is balanced vastly better. It basically has the same two "Summoner Spell" slots as in LoL, but these are simply handled in a much more creative and balanced way. For example, there is a "Flash" equivalent but unlike in League it hasn't been overpowered since launch and 3+ years later the developers are too incompetent to think up a fix.

Overall, from what I've played, the game is a more simplified, more streamlined, more intuitive version of DotA. Or a more complex, more balanced, more enjoyable form of LoL. All of this with of course the 3rd person element makes it a top contender in the genre in my humble opinion.

Okay, thank you for the very detailed overview. I think I will download it and try it out when I find some time. It sounds like a nice game and a good alternative to Dota.

I would attribute this to lack of know-how on Hirez' part with Steam's patcher. There was a patch that went out just now with new skins, some nerfs to Xing Tian and the Blink active. It's been asked on Reddit also, but no real reply as of yet.

Played SMITE for the first time and have to say it is very good. It is confusing at first, especially if you come from Dota. The UI is nothing like Dota (or any MOBA) which is most likely because it is like a 3rd person shooter. However, it is still a Moba in it's heart, you have the towers (with some of them getting respawns), you have a base that you have to defend while aiming for the enemy base, you have the creeps along with the heroes.
But the 3rd person view gives it a fresh new way to play. It feels like you are directly in teh actiond and not an observer on the sky that just gives some orders to his hero. This means also some differences to other Mobas. You can only see that what is directly in front of you, giving assassin heroes/gods a better chance to sneak up on you. They don't even need invisibility in this case since they will only see you once you are directly behind them. Also you cannot suddenly check on your team mates and how they are doing on the other side of the map. You have either walk directly there or ask them in the chat. In Dota you can just pan the screen and look yourself if they need.

The most confusing part is the skill and the inventory screen. I have to open another HUD just to check on my abilities, so it's better to know before a battle what your god does. I think in this case Dota is superior because you can hover directly over your skills to know what they do and the shop is just a small window on the right side of the screen.
The arena mode is a nice idea and fits the theme and gameplay of the game. You have shotrter but more intense fights with face to face fights.

I still don't get all the mechanics. Is there last hitting? is there denying (doesn't seem so because there is autotargeting and it does not target your own minions). The neutral camps funvtion also very different in this game. They are a combination of the jungle camps in regular Dota games with runes. This is rather unqie because you have to work for them to get them.
So far I've played Neith, Thor and Ra. Thor was probably my best experience. Despite dying very often I had a good understanding of his skills and could kill a lot of heroes.

And one thing is what I like the most: Your strentgh an int influence your skill damake. This is something, that bugs me in Dota, your hero gets normally stronger but that does not influence your skills (except in some rare cases like silencer  or outworld evourer, where stats give your skills bonus damage). Since Dota is well balanced and the differences in the skill groth from level to lecel is high enough you won't really need a stat based skill, but having it in SMITE is still a nice addition. You can directly influence your skills beside the usual leveling up of said skills.

What I dislike is the purchase of heroes. You can do this for ingame money and don't have to pay real oney, it also seems that some heroes rotate regulary to be free (now ot are the chinese gods), so you can test them before you pay.
I really hoped I can have Zeus direct fromt he startm I jzst like his appearance, his theme/lore and let's be hones, throwing lightning with your bare hands on your enemies ist just badass. His skillsread really nice, especially the passivebonus that you can inflict charges on the enemy to do more damage with your regular attacks. It reminds me of a spell based Ursa. Or maybe Bristleback, his quill spray functions probably the same. So my goal is now to save my money for Zeus. Loki looks also nice, he is so far the only hero with invisbility option (but probably isn't I couldn't check all gods in this short gaming time I had).

I also noticed the game features some obvious fan service on the godesses (since you start with Neith in the tutorial it is the first thing you will notice). I'm not such a fan of having fanservice shoved right into your face but since I don't have to play the female godesses it isn't much of an issue.

I still think that Dota is overall more fun (probably because it is so much balanced and fun to play despite the rage of the community) but SMITE will get the second spot on my MOBA list. Probably because it feels different enough and is worth to play when I don't want to play Dota (or anything like it).

*long post*
There is last hitting, but it gives you additional gold and is not a game changer nor a requirement. Stacking items do require last hits to stack. Denying is done passively by pushing your opponent under their tower. Every minion hit by a tower is worth 0 gold, last hit or not. They still provide XP though.

As for fanservice...these are gods and godesses. They're generally depicted entirely naked and some of them (Freya, Aphrodite, Athena etc) are extremely more raunchy in their lore than what they are in game. Heck, even Kali is depicted naked in the pictures. So I don't think you can really blame Hirez for that one.

Also on the note of scaling abilities:
Take note that some gods have very high base damage and poor scaling (Bastet, Thanatos, Odin, Fenrir) and are very strong early against higher scaling gods such as Scylla and Kali. So not every god have a similar power curve. Some are incredibly strong early, some are super weak early but scale better into the lategame.

As far as invisibilty goes, Loki has it on demand, Ao Kuang can "blink" a short distance and remain stealthed for a bit and Nu Wa can summon a fog that renders friendlies invisible while they're inside the fog.

I've been playing this a lot lately and having a lot of fun.

On the bright side, the leaver penalties are much more severe than they were about a year ago.

On the less fortunate side, it seems someone leaves just about every game. I don't know if the Smite community just sucks or what, but it's frustrating when over 50% of the games are decided by which team had a leaver.

Other than that, I love the game a lot.

I'm not sure if it's a case of a mentality (I haven't seen much of that) or just server issues. Smite has been hit by a LOT of DDoS attacks in the last year since it started to become really popular. This COULD have something to do with it. sadly :(
