Okay, I spent some time int he game, however not very much. I'm currently at day 2.
So far I can say the game is very deep and complex. This does not automatically mean that a game is good but it suits this game very well and it was very well integrated into the gameplay.
Basically it's a looting game, you plan where you want to go, loot areas of the colony and return back to your base with materials and garbage items that you can recycle. Between your expiditions you invest time in researching items you found which unlocks new crafting recipes or you recycle your garbage or unwanted items, craft from the ganied materials some new equipment. You can improve literally everything, your weapons, your inventory, the energy reactor, buildings in the game. It's really crazy how much you can improve here. There is always soemthign to do that keeps the player enganged and entertained.
There are two main resources in the game, energy and time. Energy can be distributed to the different areas of the colony when you are at your base. At the beginning you have enough energy to maintain everything you need, but the reacter degenerates over time and it gets even worse if you get attacked. You can craft better reactor modules from materials at some point which gives you more energy and allow you to power up more areas at the same time.
If you don't find garbage to recycle, you can also extract ore fromt he nearby mine or grow some plants in the biosphere.

The survival aspect fromt he game comes from two different sources. First are your needs. This turns out to be exactly like in "The Sims". You need food, sleep, drinking and even go to the toilet. Additionally you have also to keep the infection low, that is spreading inside of you.
The other obvious source are of course the enemies. They seem to be some zombie-like mutants in different categories. The map gives you an indication with the infection rate, how many enemies are in that area. If you kill an enemy, the rate drops, over time the rate will increase and so will the enemy activity. You can decrease the speed at which the rate grows if you power up an area and have functioning oxygen and temperature regulators. The infection spreads quick on areas with low oxygen and temperature levels.
eventually enemies will attack your base and focus on the reactor. If the reactor gets destroyed, you will loose (no power=no oxygen). You can insert weapons you find in turret slots and the turrets will then take the weapon and fire with it on incoming enemies. This has soem very slight tower defense value, however, turrets are at fixed places and you can only equip them with one type of weapons, SMGs. It would be cooler if you could equip the other weapon types (except melee) as well.

The game reminds me like a mix of Ghost of Mars, Last Days on Mars (both films feature a similiar scenario), the Dead Space series (especially DS2 which plays also on some kind of colony) and Take on Mars (the Mars colonization mode to be precise).
Subterrain feels very well developed and has a very nice and scary atmophere which you get rarely in a top-down horror game. I do find the enemies at this point a little too easy to kill. This may change in the latter parts of the game however.

1 yea I'm at day 13 I think and I'm really enjoying this game for some reason I just really like the loop of this game loot-come back to base-swap out equipment to what's been repaired in the nano repair-start up some mining and farming-research anything I want to research-then recycle the loot I've brought back that cant be used for otherwise-put something on build(For me that's usually first aid kits among other things)-then go back to the tube and go back to looting something you've forgotten to mention (okay 2 things) is that in areas that you don't have oxygen and are freezing require you to wear a oxygen tank and heat tank and that the reactors cores deteriate in time last time I played I had one of them on research and am very curious as to what will result from that

2 pretty much agree although my games a little weird since for it was several days before I discovered the key card in central to start unlocking the different departments so I spent that time non stop looting and returning so I had a absurd amount of recycling material by the time I got round to that

3 yea enemy's aren't the hardest to kill BUT getting back health is really difficult and completely impossible without a health kit out in the dungeons you can sleep sure but that wastes valuable time and is pretty risky and the health you get from health kits is not very much(compared to what you take if you get abused by mutants especially if you get bleeded) but that may change when I get the software to build my better version

4 take on mars? is that worth playing? the theme of this game is what attracted me to it in the first place?.

Take on Mars is actually a Mars Research Simulator and the colonization part makes only a small part of the game but is the most liked in the game and most mods are dedicated to the colonization feature.
The overall gameplay is however that you play as the manager of a space programm center that is tasked with researching Mars. You start out by building small drones equipped with a camera to take first pictures of the planet and also take some basic samples of the surface, later you can build rovers and travel across the terrain. very late in the game you can start the colonization program and send manned expiditions rto Mars and that part plays like a regular Survival game and turns the whole gameplay upside down. You basically play from the point of view of the atsronauts. You build a base, build some biospheres and other stuff and have to manage oxygen and food.
I think you can skip the whole research part and step right into the colonization game mode but that's not actually the point of the game. The point is a more or less accurate simulation of space center that surveys Mars. The first hour into the game is the hardest because you start out with an equipment that can basically nothing and has shitty cameras where you cannot make out a single detail. But the game wants to reflect the progress of space research and i guess this is very true to what we had at the beginning when we started with exploring space.

that sounds super rad I'm going to take a look into that as soon as steam starts btw on the note of that something else I really like about sub terrain is how real it feels I truly can see a mars colony in the future looking like that (apart from the jewellery stores that just seems like a waste of metal to me) after being to establish it self properly.

just looked at the store page and well yea I wouldn't think this had research simulator aspects at all from the store page(provided this is the game your talking about and not some different game with insane level of similarity's) still doesn't look like it would run well on my laptop but ill take a look when it leaves early access.

I just noticed that you need an activ e connection to Steam to play the game. this is rather unusual and I don't think I like it.
I never had anything like this since... I don't even remember I had this ever. Don't get me wrong, I'm used to running Steam while playing games but this is not the point here, the point is, that I have to run Steam AND Steam has to be in the online mode. Other games let me play them, when I'm in offline mode, only difference is, that Steam achievments might not work (depends on the game) and of course Steam cloud won't work, so you cannot sync online saves (but you don't need it anyway, when you play on the same machine).
Subterrain lets me start the game but not load my save game, telling me that I have to check my connectiont o Steam. I can only imagine that this is because of the Steamworks leaderboards. Still an aweful concept.

The problem is, currently I have problems with the internet, the whole CITY has problems with the internet because one of our providers has technical problems (and as you can guess, I'm a customer of this provider). the result is, that I cannot keep a constantly connection to Steam and I can only open a hand ful of websites (this site is one of them), so I cannot continue to play at this point.

yea I noticed that before I didn't think it was even possible for a game to need steam up to play btw I intend to quiz the developer on this since  this does not seem deliberate since he seems like a smart fellow and this really has no benefit what so ever to anybody.

edit just put up a post about this in the forum hopefully I didn't come of as a prick.

how's it going? this game is still great but It is rather repetitive in ways I've come to realise although I'm enjoying the loop and theme enough to ignore that.

Yeah, it is repitive to some point. But actually that's what I enjoy about the game. It is more or less what the game is about. Plan your exploration in one of the many areas, move out, grab everything you can before inventory space or oxygen run out and then return to your base to make use of all the junk you found. Recycle it, research new stuff ( I really like the reverse engineering system in the game) and then craft items you need. It's also important to keep the infection level low, so you have to rotate your areas regulary in order to keep the infected contained.
However, my complaint goes to finding the blueprints for the data chips. I searched whole viking square for one and the only thing I found was a notice in the last floor, that I have to go to Gemini for a cip. I was really anoyed because I thought it was the same chip that I searched for five floors. However, i looked up in a guide and there as a chip in Viking square but so well hidden, you won't stumble over it, you won't even find it if you search every single corner. It's the perfect example of "Guide, dang it!".
Spoiler for Hiden:
To be more clear, the Chip is on floor 4 in a  secret section. You get only access to the section if you find the ventilator vent which is esy to miss and does not obviusly show you, that you can enter it. Really stupid design choice.

1 yea I like the reverse engineering aspect as well one of the things about and with recycling means that there's no such thing as a useless item now with my weapons typically ill put a set on repair and when I get back ill swap that set with the one I took to do my run of the area and then so on and so on but if I have some items out side the cycle witch I don't have need of I can research them and recycle what cant be researched more at that time
2 with the areas I've been doing runs of I've typically been targeting a single area and running It in till its empty how ever with the insane infection that I've got going on at the moment it may be wise to try cycling it more
3 seriously?! now ill need to go back there just to get that and waste so much valuable time I assumed those particular vents were just in case you wanted to edge round the main death trap of a room that chip should have been put in the final floor because
Spoiler for Hiden:
the final floor of Viking square is really quite underwhelming compared to the floors below
