Stellaris
« on: October 09, 2015, 08:41:57 pm »
http://www.stellarisgame.com/

Anyone else excited? I feel like this could be the 4X we have been waiting for. It's got paradox behind it. If they could build something in the stars that had the power of Europa or Crusader, it's going to be great. I just get the feeling of endless exploration of new places, new alien races, and the emergent situations that come out of that.

Yes, I know we have been burned before, but I think this might be it. I'm hopeful.

I had a look, but there's so little info on.... absolutely anything that I find it impossible to get interested in.

It's all concept art (or whatever) and "look at the shiny things here!" sorts of stuff on that site, and alot of pretty words.

For the most part, I'll care when they have some detailed gameplay to show off.

Typical over-advertising site without any real information what the game might be about. It's the same with the new upcoming XCOM which shows a lot of awesome stuff in the trailer but no real gameplay footage or WHAT THE HECK the game is about.

Its a paradox game, the point of Stellaris right now is not the actual site. its the dev diaries, which are over here.

Though to be fair, at least the Stellaris site is not completely broken if you have ghostery active when the page loads, unlike the xcom one. ::)

There's also some information over on steam. This post wasn't for a review of their website, but rather, if you heard anything about it and if you are excited. Which I am.

Imo there is plenty of information, at least if you want to know the general gist

1) Random species with 6 (and more if it is moddable) phenotypes. Phenotypes means the biological classification and they mean it as "art" classification. Meaning 6 unique race sprite sets, within a phenotype there can be thousands of variations though that are not visible in art, but may still have huge and far reaching consequences.
2) Clausewitz Engine game, so font smoothing and font size problems, bad interface and no dynamic growing galaxy or massive scope events ;)
3) Gonna work kinda like CK2 in space, just de-bloated and sci-fied .

Chances are it's going to be interesting, but we'll see. As already said, very little info out there but If you already get hyperventilation from the mention of "Clausewitz Engine" then you should probably pass on it ;)

Moderate excitement, mitigated somewhat by the likelihood of it running on my laptop.

I was wondering if the lack of historical context will make it harder to get into, but it looks like its too different from their other grand strategies for that to matter.

Ugh, not fond of their way of delivering information, then.  Those take WAY too freaking long to deal with, when I dont need THAT MUCH info.  Give me some screenshots, give me a synopsis and a bunch of bullet-points.... that's really all I need.

Not to mention that having it NOT on the site is bloody stupid; if you arent already familiar with their way of doing this when going into it, all it does is confuse and push some people away, because they dont know what the heck it is, dont develop an interest yet, and forget about it (which I'm very, very likely to do).

For now I'll look elsewhere for something like this.

It's a cross between Paradox's historical simulators and science fiction, and it's supposed to create you an entire sci-fi fueled history of the future based on a half dozen different sci-fi settings. Of COURSE I'm excited beyond measure.

My personal misgivings are as to how well Paradox will be able to rein in the UI design. I spend more time fighting the menus than I do the Crusades in Crusader Kings, and that's just wrong.

Newest dev diary is about ftl systems. You got your warp drive-based, your damn huge stations-based, and your hyperdrive lanes-based ones, more or less. Things apparently may or maynot happen if you have very advanced physics-warping speed-boosting drive tech.

With a splash of Crusader Kings, maybe. It seems to be a new personal experience every time you play.
