STEAM SUMMER SALE 2015
« on: June 11, 2015, 11:24:44 am »
Starts today. http://store.steampowered.com/

Posted to make a place for people to recommend things they like/want as they go on sale. I have quite a few Steam games, and plenty on my wishlist, but the sheer number of sales can be pretty overwhelming to try to sort out what is worth getting (and trying to spare my wallet).

There is also this site https://steamdb.info/sales/ which is useful for just looking at what is on sale and whether it is actually a good discount.

A few that I am hoping get on a decent discount are
Xenonauts
Star Ruler 2
Cities: Skylines
Elite: Dangerous
and hopefully the last 2 AI War expansions that I dont have yet.

The annual crash-the-store-pages has started, so the sale has indeed begun now. :P

Dude, that is sweet!

Good publicity for TLF. Maybe now would be a good time to put a quick blurb about SBR developement on the TLF store page (if that is allowed).

Also yes, crashing. crashing steam. crashing monster game...

I've bought so much from previous sales and humble bundles and whatnot that it gets hard to find anything in lists to really get excited about anymore.

The clicker minigame is hilarious, too bad it's broken right now and is barely playable. And for the next 10 days I need to remind myself constantly that if it's not a daily/flash deal, to not buy it until the last day.

Absolutely buy Valkyria Chronicles at $5. It's a nice strategy-RPG sort of thing that I found loads of fun with some interesting characters and story and a pleasantly unique artstyle. Pretty "Anime-ish" if that's relevant, but if you like or at least don't mind that sort of thing then I definitely recommend it.

I don't have anything that I'm hugely interested in, although at least I've almost completely worked through my backlog from last sale having at least played all the games I bought if not finished.

The ones I most want are There Came an Echo, Dreamfall Chapters, Crysis 2, République Remastered, and Dex. A few other inexpensive visual novel and RPG type games are already inexpensive (as in, 2-3 dollars) so I might just violate the usual rules and grab them now since they're  mega cheap anyhow. If something is already 75% off, I think it's safe to assume that it's unlikely to drop further by any significant margin if it's already at three dollars with that discount?
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

A higher than 90% discount is really unlikely, so at most it is probably a difference of a dollar or so, even if it does get a steeper discount.

I saw some debate about the Steam returns program being basically a price guarantee, as long as you dont play the game more than 2 hours. If the price drops, you might be able to return it and then re-buy it.

But yeah
The clicker minigame is hilarious, too bad it's broken right now and is barely playable. And for the next 10 days I need to remind myself constantly that if it's not a daily/flash deal, to not buy it until the last day.
follow this advice if you want the best deal.

I've bought so much from previous sales and humble bundles and whatnot that it gets hard to find anything in lists to really get excited about anymore.

Add to that that it's really come to the point where almost no game has any new ideas that I could be interested in, and yeah...I'll be sitting this one out.
I honestly don't know what game I could possibly want anymore. Everything's been done, everything's been seen, and nobody's trying anything new D:

Just because it isn't new doesn't mean it isn't worth playing.   :(
Sir, You are being Hunted is on sale for $2, and it's an interesting stealth-FPS.
I'm hoping for good sales on Sunless Sea and Endless Legend, too.  Neither game is new, but both seem like good plays.
Also - Divinity: Original Sin, Drox Operative, Dominions 4, Grimrock 2, Pilliars of Eternity... I've actually got quite a bit on my wishlist.

Of course, what I'd really like to buy is this game called Stars Beyond Reach, but there's no 'Buy' button on the page.  I want to give them money, but I can't.  Why won't you take my money?

> Sir, you are being Hunted
No new ideas, lackluster gameplay and an overreliance on british imagery that the british keep thinking is amusing

> Sunless sea
Same overrated British imagery. Gameplay doesn't seem to offer anything. Supposedly the writing's good?

> Endless Whatever
I will spit fire and bile at anyone who calls that a good game.

> Divinity: Original Sin
Supposedly a good RPG. But there's tons of those already, and I don't see why I should play this one over the cheaper alternatives.

> Drox Operative
I like the Soldak games. But they're just painful to look at...and if you've played one of them, you've played them all.

> Dominions 4
Now there is an actual good game with excellent ideas. Awesome content. Practically nonexistent AI makes single-player pointless, but I think Dom4 is the first game on this list that would actually recommend to anyone remotely interested.

> Grimrock 2
I didn't like Grimrock 1 at all. There seemed to be no appeal whatsoever to me. Quite likely a subjective affair.

> Pillars of Eternity
See Divinity:OS. Does this do anything that older RPGs do not? Because I still have a lot of the old Black Isle rpgs backlogged; and I stopped playing those because the gameplay was boring and the writing got repetitive.

So maybe some of those games are good; but there are good games aplenty already.
I see no reason to buy a game that is just as good as anything before it, maybe with some better graphics, but costs me fresh money.
Differently put: Good is not enough. I have good already. I want either better, or new, but merely good isn't worth money or time.

Sunless Sea's writing is the same pretty good writing thats makes up Fallen London, but with some actual game around it this time instead of some sort of browser point-and-read thing.

Oh, I agree there's little 'new' out there.  Part of that is that it is very difficult to come up with something that is both new and fun.

But for me, a good rehash of ideas that have been done is just fine.  I read at least 100-150 novels a year, and maybe 2 or 3 of them have new ideas or stories.  The rest are still entertaining, and to me, that's what I'm looking for more than anything else.  So I'll get Divinity:OS, and PoE, and a bunch of other traditional RPGs.  And I'll buy Sunless Sea, even though it's just a Lovecraftian-style Roguelike, because it seems to be a well done version.
Of course, there are games I've gotten severely burned on.  Civ V and Civ BE are two of the biggest.  Pre-ordered both, and regretted it each time.  Those were NOT well-done.

I've got to ask, though - what do you play these days?

I guess I've been playing games for so long that the novelty of "IT'S A GAME, I CAN DISTRACT MYSELF!" has worn off a bit. Or maybe it's a kind of mental immune system, deciding that I've wasted more than enough of my life on good re-hashes of old ideas.

So, plans: Finishing my year-old game of Stalker (Misery), months-old game of XCOM (Long War), finish my reading of War and Peace (dear god, it's as long as they say, and nowhere as good! I'm guessing no-one ever finished reading it.), re-read Neuromancer, finish reading Blindsight...

...and somewhere in between, I suppose I'll have to work, study, and keep my social life alive D:
