I wouldn't say that. A lot of Metroidvanias give you at least some kind of direction (except the very first metroid games given how old they are).
Axiom Verge fails a liitle about that but this can be excused because the game is so god damn twisted. The game defies reality anyway, so I think the disorientation is somewhat wanted because you should feel like you are lost in some surreal and grotheque environment you don't know. You feel trapped.
Also, the game is pretty disgusting. But that's good for me. But seriously, you should have a strong stomach for it.
