Dungeons of Dredmor has been patched a couple times now, and now I'm having fun with it! Anyone tried playing as a vampire yet? It's quite a twist from the normal gameplay of having to heal in place all the time. Actually, it feels like it solves one of the major drawbacks in the mechanics. So far, I'm not a big fan of necromancy but the sleep spell actually does work, and I think that clever use of that spell could help get over the initial jump in enemy strength when you go up one floor.

I don't understand the draw to dungeons of dredmor.  It seems to be like exactly like many other roguelikes that we all know and love, but with much reduced flexibility.

I think I'll stick with nethack and dungeon crawl stone soup for the time being.

The problem with Vampirism is it prevents you from eating to regain health. There's no real way to retreat and regen, you either win or you die.

My favorite skill so far is actually the Fungal Arts skill. You have a skill that puts out an item called "Spores" and you can plant them in corpses or in dirt to produce a random mushroom. The mushrooms themselves are like potions, some of which are extremely powerful; the Greedy Blungecap, for example, which allows you to steal health by attacking a la Vampirism. There's a mushroom that allows you to turn invisible for 6 rounds, there's a mushroom that gives you armor for a certain number of attacks, there's a mushroom that gives you a bonus to your max life for 60 rounds, a mushroom that gives you food-like regen that stacks with food, one that gives you magic power and another that regens mana, one that summons a bunch of thrown spores that cause AoE confusions, and some others. On top of this, you get the ability to summon two pets (you can only have one out at a time) mana-free, that cause AoE confusion when they spawn.

My biggest problem with the skill is that there's a lot of micromanagement involved in constantly creating and planting spores, but it's definitely not as annoying as the crafting skills. It's a great support skill, and it's allowed my Rogue-type character to go toe-to-toe with tougher enemies. Also, you can sell the mushrooms you don't want for a good profit early on.

That's not true. Enemies do not die permanently, so if you get below a certain health, you need only backtrack a little bit. The difference between floors allows you to farm also; you can use the teleport tiles to move around. You can also feed off of corpses if you upgrade vampirism.

I understand what you mean, I just didn't include "run back and fight weaker enemies" to fit under my definition of "retreat and regen." Corpses also disappear fairly rapidly, which I learned when dealing with Fungal Arts. Have you tried Fungal Arts yet?

Btw, where do you sell stuff?

At the random shops (the demon guy with the checkered shirt), you open up your inventory and drag items onto him.

Oh, that's how.... thanks. How was I supposed to figure this out? (given that for *buying* stuff you just pick it up from the display)

I have tried the mushroom ability, and I will probably play a character with it because it's just plain fun. But in trying to come up with the optimal character, I do not include any crafting because everything you need is already in the dungeon.

Selling items is a necessity if you want to be able to purchase the more expensive stuff and upgrade it. If you don't understand why this game is appealing for some of us, it has to do with the interface. Granted, the graphics and interface could use a lot of work because some things like selling items is indeed unintuitive, but it's a lot better than a text only game interface. The way you are supposed to figure out selling is to recognize first and foremost that selling must be required and secondly that other games offer dragging and dropping, like Torchlight. It's an assumption the authors made.

I have nethack installed on just about every device I own that can run it. I see no need to pay money for a not as fun version with graphics :P

The crafting skills do come with pretty useful stat bonuses (which is the only reason I'd really worry about Smithing) but I agree that they're sub-optimal. Fungal Arts I put above the others in terms of utility, because mushrooms are very rare in my experience, very powerful, and the pets are incredibly useful. But I haven't really put a lot of work into creating an optimal character yet, so I can't say- I've only played on Dwarven Moderation with Permadeath on (which is a requirement for the Roguelike feel) and crafting is still interesting enough to include.

I imagine that the most powerful characters are either: dual wield with as many proc abilities as you can fit in (I'd even be willing to try two different weapon types for the stat bonuses and procs, but I haven't actually tried this out yet), dodge (with dodge equipment), vampirism, assassination, and burglary/perception. Or, a pure mage type who focuses on Promethean until Fireball (since it's a ridiculous ability), mathemagic, with blood magic and burglary/perception. Taking either burglary or perception is pretty much a necessity, in my opinion, though you can really bounce on one or the other. Both give you some anti-trap ability, Perception being WAY higher obviously, but Burglary gives you unlimited free lockpicks and stealth. As much as I really enjoy pure Rogues, I don't think you'd have enough combat ability

How will you know it's not as fun if you haven't played it? Roguelikes live and die by their mechanics. Personally, I think ToME and Incursion are vastly superior to Nethack in terms of fun, but that's just me. And I know others will disagree, because different mechanics are appealing to them. Dungeons of Dredmor isn't just a "Nethack clone with graphics"; TotalBiscuit referred to it as "Munchkin: The Roguelike" which is quite accurate. It's very silly and colorful, with fairly good music to boot. More importantly, it's accessible for those new to the genre on the easiest setting while remaining challenging on the hardest.

Right, you want to be able to stack procs because you only get one action per turn and one character to control. The vast majority of magic I have seen does not stack like the melee abilities causing me to view them with some suspicion. Vampirism is the correct choice, although it does make the gameplay a little more tedious in a different way. If you stack the armor ability, you can get the regenerative properties during battle that you would normally get from food (after you upgrade it).
