steam sale: Summer camp special
« on: June 30, 2011, 08:19:51 pm »
We run. We jump. We swim and play.
We row and go on trips.
But the things that last forever
    are our dear friendships...

    Camp Anawanna,
we hold you in our hearts.
And when we think about you
    (It makes me wanna fart!)

It's "I hope we never part." Now get it right or pay the price.

For me, so far, I upgraded to the legendary edition of blood bowl (I enjoyed the dark Elven edition so that was not too hard of a choice). I also picked up lead and gold for $1.50. Looks worth that in arcade terms at least.

Movers and shakers to watch:
spectromancer
2K catalog
arcen catalog (I assume you already have it if you are here)

And over at GOG.com,
Giants: Citizen Kabuto and freespace 1/2, a couple games I had totally missed out on back then. They are having a massive sale also on many games.

The Longest Journey for $2.50.

Seriously, if you have never played that game, you NEED to buy it. It is a work of art, simply the greatest adventure game of all time (or at least close enough to it.) The character models definitely show their age, but the environments are incredibly striking, and the storyline, characters, and voice work are simply phenomenal, with the most realistic and compelling female protagonist I've ever seen in a game.

The sequel is... not quite as good. It forgoes the traditional point-and-click interface for an action-adventure style. The story is great, the graphics are good for their time, the characters are believable... but the gameplay is awful. The fighting sequences and stealth sequences will make you tear your hair out; the game is stiff at its best, and a frustrating nightmare at its worst. But I don't regret playing through it, I just have a hard time recommending it.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto

I just got that a few days ago, too, because I've been meaning to play it since it came out, so nearly 11 years now.  It's fun, but whoever decided to not allow you to save during levels is a bastard.  Making it all the way to the end of a long level only to get one-hit by a sniper and have to start over from the very beginning is starting to irritate me.  Probably more so than it would bother me otherwise, because it's otherwise really entertaining and has a good, British sense of humor about things.

The Longest Journey for $2.50.

Yeah, that's also been on my list.  I've just been waiting for a good deal on it, and it's hard to say no to this one.

The general rule of thumb for the big Steam sales like this is to check in every day for the daily deals and get any of those if they're something you're particularly interested in.  For anything else, wait until the last day to buy it.  There's always a chance that it'll be featured as one of the daily specials and be marked down even further than it is already, so unless it's already 75% off or more, be patient, and you can save money.  Stuff that's only 25-33% off now may show up as 50-90% off for 24 hours later in the week.

As far as the indie stuff in today's deals that people might not know much about (as opposed to the big-name games everyone's already heard of), BIT.TRIP RUNNER is pretty fun if you like that sort of thing.  It looks like a platform game, but it plays more like a rhythm game (you don't directly control your character's movement, only jumping/attacking/etc.).

I also enjoyed Recettear, even if I never did quite get around to finishing it.  It's kind of a JRPG-lite, with the focus on running an item shop to rip off...I mean provide services to the townspeople and adventurers/mercenaries, managing your inventory and economy and buying and selling various goods, but you can also hire adventurers to go into dungeons to acquire items to sell in your shop, which involves basic Secret of Mana-style combat.

I have seen the longest journey, but I didn't really know if that was a fair adventure title or one of those obtuse pixel hunt games. Let me know. If anyone else wants to get into blood bowl, just give a shout.

My friend recommended it to me before, and it's the kind of thing I like to play, and the price is right, but SecuROM kills it for me, sadly.

I would, by I'm no fun - I can't even win against PC on easy, leave alone against human opponent.

Hard to say, as with inventory-based adventure games, people often have different tolerances. It's not as bad as King's Quest in the pixel-hunting aspect, and the puzzles weren't enormously difficult. I really enjoyed it, but then I adore the genre, so I had to admit my bias.

I also have to agree with Recettear, it is very charming. Capitalism, ho!

I just won a round, vampires versus humans. I'm joining the league over at rock paper shotgun. Apparently, you don't have to be good to join, as they will put you in a suitable division. I think it would be fun to have some representation from AI players.

I picked up Fallout + Fallout 2 and Descent 3 at GoG.com last week, and other than updating my Civilization V DLC on Steam, I haven't bought anything yet. I'm kind of in a video game surge right now thanks to massive purchases earlier in the year, so I'm trying to hold off until something really worth while comes along, if at all.

I liked it, but many people did not. You are outfitting your fleet, and then you can't influence a battle further, you just watch how it unfolds. I do like this time of game, others loath it.

I also liked deck-building Warstorm, until it was bought and shut down as a stand alone game and made into a face-book app instead, In Warstorm you only build a deck, and the game is played automatically based on the decks players created. I've heard an opinion, that this is dumb that you can't play and computer plays instead of you, but for me, idea of constructing a deck, fleet or a robot program and pitching it against other person's creation is quite appealing.

It's a boring game. You spend all this time unlocking spaceship parts and then watch as the computer does battle with what you built. You spend more time watching the game than you do playing it, and I did not feel challenged at all.

Not much time left on it today, but the Back to the Future game is pretty fantastic. Christopher Lloyd actually does the voice work for Doc, and the guy they got to do Marty does a very convincing impression of a young Michael J. Fox. And the music is all exactly like you'd expect it to be. For anyone that grew up with those movies, I can't recommend it highly enough. You'll be tripping on nostalgia in no time.

Zenith Remnant is a selectable prize in the Summer Camp Sale Prize Booth - albeit listed as a "MAP".

Because I can, here are some thoughts on today's specials, mostly the less-well-known ones.

I guess everyone kind of knows about Braid by now, but it's still technically an indie game.  If you like platform games at all, DO IT.  It has a fairly clever set of mechanics, very good level/puzzle design, and excellent art/music, and it all comes together quite well.

Similarly, if you're at all into logic puzzles, go get SpaceChem right now.  It might have "fake chemistry in space" as a theme, but it's actually more like "multi-threaded programming: the game".  If you want a challenge that requires some incredible leaps of logic that are extremely satisfying when they finally come to you, this is exactly it.  It also has a surprisingly engaging story and even more surprisingly epic background music that makes you feel really awesome whenever you get something right.

Finally, Just Cause 2 is anything but an indie game, but for $5, it's a steal.  It's 400 square miles of sandbox third-person shooter with the twist that you're equipped with an infinite supply of grappling hooks and parachutes.  Hilarity ensues.  Constantly.  It also doesn't take itself remotely seriously, and the storyline is so ridiculously over the top that it's hard not to sit there staring at the screen going, "Wait, did that really just happen?" at several points.  Heh.
