It's a really cool game. My only complaint with it is that the game's fine-tuning and technicality gets in the way of the fun. Originally it seemed like it was going to be Gratuitous Space Battles, except where you could take control of the ships (which in itself would have been fantastic). However, it has become more like an anal space-battle sim, with such attention to detail that even the multiplayer was scrapped to get all the finer points right. (It should be noted that multiplayer in a game like this is absolutely amazing, if for no other reason than that there are so few of them)
In all honestly, at least with the current state of where the base game is at, I have tried out Project Ironclads after Akylon's recommendation, and I prefer that significantly more, at least for the campaign portion. It takes the game's hosh posh of random, rather dull looking ships, and replaces them with colorful, very distinct ships in both role and design which are split into 5 different factions. It has a much different feel than the base game, and it's really interesting running into the ships of the different factions. I once ran into an alien ship that absolutely destroyed me, employing abilities and tactics that I had never seen before. It was pretty incredible, and I enjoy the very specialized and unique races quite a lot to, as I said, just the random mix of dull-looking ships that sort of blend together. The only drawback I can see to the mod so far is that it's not running on the latest version, but given that it was updated about 2 weeks ago, I can only see this as a temporary problem.
I'll keep playing it!
