This looks very impressive.  Been watching it for a while.  The ground combat looks very nice.  Can't remember seeing it in any other games of this type.  I just wish they game some indication of a release date.

Man, worst website I have seen a while, no feature list 0 Info.. oh well.. still Alpha

But that said, I must have a bad day or something but the first thing in the forum I read is this ..

http://www.stardrivegame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=95&start=20

Which makes me go (the whole topic, that is) :o I am no fan of finite "congrats for developing your system, it is now completely useless!" mode

Space Empires had that too, although it was selectable at the beginning of the game wether resources were infinite (producing a percentage every turn) or finite.

I'm assuming Stardrive will have both as well? Otherwise the system will likely balance itself around finite resources. Which could prevent excess turtling.

I would hope they do a compromise where a system as a finite resource count, but after it is exhausted it still maintains 20% of its original income. Very rare does a planet go completely barren, it is just that a planet loses access to easy resources.
Life is short. Have fun.

The game is still very much in development. I'm sure the dev is open to suggestions and criticism?

You can ask on my behalf and claim the credit.

At the very least it will prevent the rare stalemate where one or both sides has oodles of defenses and no side is can afford to break them.

It's also pretty different from what is generally the case. Take a planet and then forget about it, doing the occasional click and upgrade. It could potentially be awesome and forcing people out of their typical turtle thinking (which is what Forged Alliance did for Supreme Commander with the nerf to mass fabricators and moving mass spots out on the map, away from starter bases)

It depends on so many things I don't know. Just a complete on / off switch on getting resources seem to cause problems on its own. There are other ways to deal with turtling.

For example on MOO you can make fortress planets, but it is at the cost of your empire size. You can't fortify everywhere at once, so the enemys hit where you are weak. If you do somehow manage to fortify everywhere, then your upkeep will cripple you and then the enemy can use special ship designs to crack your defenses. For while you can only bring the single planet's production (defenses) into the fight, the enemy can use their whole empire's production into starships to attack.

Between SMAC, GalCiv 2, MOO2, and SE4/5 being on my machine pretty much at all times, it's very difficult to be interested in any other 4X games.
