Star Citizen - The Return of the Space Sim

Chris Roberts of Wing Commander fame has come back to gaming, and has brought the space sim back with him.

I wish them well, but the game is just too...ambitious, for me to watch it.

It is asking to do a lot. And I mean a lot.

It wants to take the X series in depth, make it more responsive like evochron legends, make it multiplayer like EVE, and sup up the graphics to level 10.

That just sounds...hard.

Hard to make, hard to play (from a hardware point of view).

Good luck I guess.

EDIT: It aims to raise 2 to 4 million without using kickstarter. I'm glad I finished my coffee already.

Oh fun I just realized that with no kickstarter there is no 3rd party to verify actual amounts raised. Or to even bloody keep track of how much money it is raising over time (this is fact as of right now.)

So you are literally taking a blind leap of faith, for there is no fallback of the game not making enough money.

That's not terribly uncommon in kickstarter funding, which is the model they're following.

Once the original funding is over, presumably that's all closed up.

But the pcgamer article did talk about microtransactions and implied the purchase of in-game-currency with real-currency when talking about what it would take to buy a ship big enough to house your friends' fighters.

...

It's a game I hope is made, but I'm not holding my breath for it to be even completed, let alone actually meet the Peter-Molyneaux-esque description.  Actually I'm not sure PM even went that far.
Have ideas or bug reports for one of our games? Mantis for Suggestions and Bug Reports. Thanks for helping to make our games better!

I'm not a fan of in game benefits. I feel PA did this much better with unique backer-specific commanders that were just skins. Having actual gameplay benefits just makes the game easier, and thus detracts from the experience. It's...no, I do not approve.

Also "RSI Aurora". Repetitive Strain Injury? :P

I know its common to have reskins or cosemetic units or things named after you, but is it really not uncommon to out the door get vastly better craft and in game currency?

The one thing that makes or breaks a F2P game is failed already in this Kickstarter. "Buying power".

A one-time purchase game with optional microtransactions. Compare it to Guild Wars 2 if you would like.
