Kerbal Space Program
« on: January 16, 2015, 04:34:45 am »
How does this thread not exist yet on this forum? I mean...wat?

So, anyone who plays this? Personally, I've sunk almost 60 hours into it in a few weeks, in spite of working full time, so I guess I can consider myself stuck in it. I've played a few games of Science Sandbox because I like the idea of collecting science and unlocking tech. I haven't tackled Career mode yet because it's still outside my skill to make something that not only gets to the Mün, but does so cheaply enough :D

At the moment I've pretty much conquered both The Mün and Minmus with science probes, and I've even set foot on both and planted flags to display my conquest. So now I'm mostly just peppering the surfaces of both with science probes to soup up whatever science I can find.

I have mapping satellites around Kerbin, The Mün, Minmus, Eve and one heading for Duna in a short bit. Those provide some valuable insight to altimetry and the biome map of the planets, but also some valuable science. Next plan is probably to try and land on Duna with a probe/rover and prepare a manned mission there.

I've also just built my first airplane that managed to reach Mach 2 and was on a mission to gather science from the poles. Unfortunately, the landing didn't go well and I smashed both my engines, but everyone survived at least. I have some ideas on how to improve that plane. It was quite unstable at level flight.

Mods I run:
Some graphical stuff.
KW Rocketry
B9 Aerospace
Deadly Reentry
MapSat
Ferrum Aerospace Research

and a few others. But those are the big ones.

Few screenshots of KSP while I'm playing.

I've sunk around 200 hours into it.  I've sent probes as far as Jool, and landed (poorly) a manned mission on Duna.  Made a colony on Eve from all the failed rescue attempts.  Orbital rendezvous still give me trouble, but I've gotten pretty decent at docking.

I've only barely touched on Space Planes.  Nothing that got near to orbit, much less another body.  Rocketry is just much more my thing.

I run mostly vanilla except for some utility mods like Kerbal Engineer, Kerbal Alarm Clock, Improved Chase Camera, RCS Build Aid, etc.  There are enough parts for me as is.  I use FAR sometimes, but I'm sticking with vanilla now since they've announced an aerodynamics overhaul.

Since Career mode was added, I haven't played as much, because I feel the need to start over each time there's a new update.  That will probably change now that Beta has started and new stuff going forward won't be as dramatic.

I've played it a *lot*, usually with several of the following mods:

  • Mechjeb
  • Extraplanetary Launchpads
  • Deadly Reentry
  • Kethane
  • Ferram Aerospace
  • LAZORs
  • Robotics
  • RemoteTech
  • Various attachment / dynamic strut affairs

Been playing off and on for the last 8 hours.  I really like pretty much all the changes they've made.  The aerodynamic and heat model are pretty well balanced between FAR and what it used to be.  The new visual enhancements really add to the drama of launch and re-entry.  The contracts are more varied and the qualifications for them make more sense.  I haven't gotten to the new resources yet, so I can't comment on that.

I was really worried they were calling it 1.0 too soon, but it looks to me like they pulled it off fantastically.

I ended up picking it up during its 1.0 sale, and it is definitely really fun. I've only played career mode and a little bit of sandbox, but prefer career mode. The best I've done so far is get manned science orbiters around the Mun, and killed a few Kerbals trying to land, but I'm still working!

I also haven't tried any mods, since I personally find the base game to be really good as is.

The base game right now is good enough that any major mods are pretty much unnecessary. I'd prefer the big graphical overhaul mods, but they're naturally not done yet, and Kerbal Alarm Clock is always nice, but other than that, the stock game is really solid now.

Yeah, stock 1.0 is definitely playable and enjoyable with no mods.  That said, though, there are a few I really like having.  Docking Port Alignment Indicator, Kerbal Alarm Clock, Kerbal Engineer Redux, Chatterer, and Improved Chase Cam to name a few.

That's one of the things I love about the game.  There are so many high quality mods that the game just never seems to get old.

I just recently discovered CKAN, and hoh boy. Now I no longer have any excuses like "I can't play KSP because I don't have two days to find and install mods".

Also, I managed to talk my professor into letting me use KSP as an alternative to PowerPoint. Yay.
