Spiral Knights
« on: March 22, 2011, 12:35:55 pm »
I just discovered this game today, thanks to Rock Paper Shotgun giving away a bunch of Beta codes. It's a new game from the Puzzle Pirates guys, and from the 15 minutes or so of it I've played so far, it feels a lot like Phantasy Star Online Lite. Java based, like Minecraft, so you can run it right out of your browser, and it's a pretty lightweight game. Still Beta of course, so we'll see how it turns out, but it's not bad so far. Will play more later.

That sounds tight! I'll have to check it out. Even if it's not my style, the name is pretty hilarious.
I like the fact that it's straight up browser playable. That's a huge perk for me since I don't like downloading things on my computer much. Thanks for the referal!
Games found in my toy chest: KOTR, Halo: Reach, Red Alert(yeah, old school) and my rubber ducky.

Been enjoying it so far. The only complaint I have is that after about Tier 3, you NEED to spend money on the game. It's impossible to craft anything above that level since it costs more than the 100 energy you get each day.

The site appears to be down at the moment, so I can't check, but can it be run not in a browser?  The continuing trend of running everything in your browser just because you can makes me want to stab someone, because every single browser out there sucks in its own special way, and the last thing I need is something stupid happening in one tab screwing up everything else in the few dozen others I have open at any given time.  I hate running unnecessary crap in my browser so much that I've gone so far as to write a Python CLI client for an AJAX webchat, so...yeah.  Heh.

There is a downloadable client. In fact, the website just uses a java pane to launch the client.

Huzzah.  Maybe I should go try it, then.  I kind of meant to when I heard about it a few months ago but forgot.  So many games, so little time...

Heh.  Finally got around to trying this, mostly because it got added to Steam and I could install it by just pushing a button.  The free hat didn't hurt, either.

Kind of reminds me of Torchlight meets Free Realms (back in the early days before they completely destroyed the UI and made it unplayable) for some reason.  It's mildly obnoxious that you can't do anything when you run out of energy for the day instead of just being limited to only low-level areas like Vindictus originally did, so even though you had somewhat restricted access per day if you didn't pay, you weren't stuck there with literally nothing at all you could do in the game.

The hit detection seems a bit wonky sometimes with the gun projectiles, which is a bit frustrating, but that's more than made up for by how ridiculously overpowered being able to attack with a ranged weapon while moving in an ARPG is.  You can kite like nobody's business.  Just to see how it would go, I tried getting to tier 2 using nothing but the starting equipment, and once you get your kite on, it's pretty trivial.  You do move at about half speed while shooting, but as long as you fire in bursts and stop shooting right when something's attacking you, you can dodge easily.  I haven't used my shield in hours, generally have more health restoration laying around than I know what to do with, and only use my sword to hit boxes and bushes, because it's slightly faster for that.

Is there any point at all in using charged shots?  It seems to do about 50% more damage than a regular attack, but in the amount of time it takes to use one, I could fit in six normal ones...

I tried this last night. Yes, for the hat. I haven't played more than an hour or so of TF2 in the last few months (except for idling on a practice map for drops), but by God I will get every hat I can.

It really just didn't catch me. I couldn't figure out the draw. Even if this was entirely free to play without the micropayment energy foolishness, I still don't think I'd have much interest in it. It just seems too generic and bland. There's not much of a story draw, there's not much character customization, there's not much to do except swat my sword at a bunch of samey enemies. Maybe it gets better down the line somewhere? I just couldn't get excited about it at all.

I've hardly played more than a couple hours since 2009, and I still do random crap like this for the hats.  I don't even know why.  Whatever it is, they're onto something with it.

Ok, apparently it wasn't as exciting as I thought, because while I was disappointed that I couldn't keep playing when my energy ran out on the first day and didn't want to stop, I kind of have completely forgotten to play at all since then, which is not a great endorsement.  On the plus side, that let me finish Max Payne 2 and The Maw instead, plus take my BIL to his first Red Sox game, so pretty much everyone except for the guys at Three Rings wins.  Well, the Sox lost, too, but who's counting?  Heh.

I haven't touched Spiral in a while. I did start playing Global Agenda though, thanks to Steam, and I quite enjoy it so far.

I downloaded this massive thing, and spent an hour installing it (for some reason it was a reaaaaaaaaaally slow installer) and then finally booted it up and saw that there was a 45 minute queue to get into the game. But apparently I could buy 'elite' access to log in faster. So I closed it and did something else. I honestly don't know if I'll ever go back to it. I mean talk about making a bad first impression, wow.
