Sorcery Part 3 on Steam
« on: April 17, 2016, 05:42:18 pm »
Actually it is there for some time now but I found out about it recently.
Some summary about the game series: Sorcery is based on the solo pen and paper adventure books of the same name. In the game you play a young sorcerer (adept wizard) who is sent out to retrieve the Crown of Kings a powerful magical artifact that was stolen by an evil archmage.
divided into four parts you travel across the world for your goal, each part of the series plays in one region of the game world.
The game uses a unqiue magic system. Wizards use the power of the stars in the sky and align three of them for a spell. Each star is represented by a letter and aligning three letters creates the desired spell. Not every letter combination works but the game will tell you anyway if you have created a spell or not and you can still change the letters. Most spells spell out (small pun here) what they do anyway. The spell SIX creates six copies of you, the spell BIG will make you giant, ZAP creates a lightning bolt and so on. Most spells sap your life energy (stamina) away if you use them and if you overdo it, you can even kill yourself (your own magic consumes you). Stronger spells don't need stamina but will need a special item. You can find magical artifacts during your adventure, sometimes you can buy them from stores, sometimes you can find them if you explore the world besides your main road.
Just to be clear, this is an interactive story adventure, so most of the time you will just read text and select an action. Between events you can select where you want to go, there are several waypoints ou can interact with. If you did something unfavourable, you can also rewind the game time and start an event from the beginning.
In some cases you have to fight enemies. Most of the time you can kill or hurt enemies before a fight when you cast magic but the simple combat system does not allow magic to be casted (probably because you don't find the time to look up in the sky anymore). The combat system is... somewhat weird and I won't describe it. I think combat is one of the few less enyojable game mechanics. You can avoid most combat situations anyway if you cast the right spell before.
There is also a dice minigame and some puzzles scattered across the game.
What I like about the game is that it is very rich in its writing and that I enjoy the special magic system. It is fun to do the same adventure twice but this time going another route in order to see what I migth have missed.
The first and second part of the game have been bundled into one game on Steam (they are released initially on iOS), the third part was released some time ago (I think february?) and you can continue your game from the first two parts if you use your save game file. If you don't have any the game will create your character with the most needed stuff. If you have played the iOS version before, you can use your save game from there and import it on the steam version. You just have to use their cloud system which does not require a registration, the game will just generate you a password at the end of the game that you have to insert in the next installment of the series.

The fourth part (and finale) of the series is currently still in development.
