So yeah, seeing as we have a bunch of MOBA players on this forum, I'm wondering what you guys think of SMITE. Have you had a chance to play it yet?

It's MOBA so I won't touch it, but I'm still curious how well it does since I happen to like the creators (Hi-Rez also made Tribes:Ascend)

I haven't gotten to play it yet, but I already harbor some ill-will towards it as Hi-Rez seem to have abandoned the eSports side of Tribes in favor of SMITE, a game in an increasingly crowded genre.

That's difficult to judge, in my opinion. Bart has always been heavily into the comp side of Tribes, and Hi-Rez have done a lot to satisfy comp players, but at the same time, the comp community has some rather ridiculus demands (7 player limit, naked spawn, etc) that simply wouldn't work with both comp and pub, so they got it in custom games. We all want demo support, but according to Hi-Rez, it can't be done without a significant workload in the current engine and therefor does not intend to do it. (It would take too much away from further development of the game).

However, when Tribes was marketed as a eSport game and it's still not there, I'm amazed that they decide to launch another game in the MOBA genre, which is overcrowded with F2P titles. So yeah, I'm wary.

So, TB made a (positive sounding, except about HiRez) video on how Smite is now, and it looked sorta interesting, despite being a third-person dotalike. How would you guys who've played it describe it to someone whose avoided playing any dotas up to this point but has watched a bit of it?

You can't really go wrong with Smite. It's simple but deep, nuanced but accessible. It's got a great tutorial system for new players, and the auto-buy/auto-level system is a stroke of genius. Not having to worry too much about last hits in lower-level play is a plus and with the diverse array of characters, there's basically something for everyone.

It's a great dotalike to start out with if you're just getting into the genre.

Yep.

This one had me at "not obsessed with last hits", which is my most hated aspect of this genre.

Not to mention that everything is skillshots, I love that part.

Pretty much what has already been said. The Free-to-Play model is quite fair. The $30 for all gods now and in the future is really good and even if you don't want to put down $30, unlocking gods with favor isn't too difficult. Plus you get a free rotation of gods every patch. Everything else that you can pay for is completely cosmetic. Overall, a really solid MOBA title.

Can you explain to someone who is as far from dota/moba/etc as one could be, why the last hit is a thing? I mean why would a developer choose to award stuff based on last hit? That does not make sense...

Because it means you can't just mindlessly be smacking down minions all the time. You have to time your shots and plan ahead. Smite doesn't have them because they are trying to be a bit more casual than LOL or DOTA, but LOL and DOTA have them because it ups the skill requirement necessary to really succeed.

I don't really see how last-hitting is all that different from kills in, say, FPS games--if you land the killing blow, you get credit for the kill. There's no kill assist going on, though. I guess the fact that a huge part of the game is getting said last-hits on creeps is different, as opposed to killing players.

Of course, I've only played DOTA 2 at a low level, so I don't know how the mechanic translates in other similar games.
