Small PC
« on: November 15, 2012, 04:14:35 am »
I just accidentally came across this web site: http://www.fit-pc.com and I liked the idea. I never actually thought that a decent PC can be fanless and noisless. Of course these are not gaming PCs, but you can easily run a media centre on it, or even develop software (if it's not high-end videogames).

They are no more expensive, than your average PC... I'm tempted to give one a try as a media centre. I'll put a plex on it and see if it's more or less convenient than my current old WDTV Live.

And this is my 500's post. So congratulations are in order =)

At my previous college, we'd run some massively huge LAN parties, and we had a server box that was on a microATX board in a little case that was about the size of a game cube and packed a quad core and 8 gigs of RAM. It's surprisingly easy to pack a lot of power into a tiny space, especially if you're using liquid cooling or full submersion.

The question is: why we don't see that everyone uses them everywhere, those on the site do not look ridiculously expensive for their spec.

Because they are absolutely terrifyingly horrible to work with. Want to replace a component? Expect hours of sweating and cable-dragging. Also, the formfactor is wierd and it can be hard to find components for the small chassis.

Don't get me wrong! They're freaking awesome as desktops, home computers and media centers, but I'd never touch one for any serious work such as gaming, rendering or similar heavy lifting. Not only because they're prone to overheating, but because they are horrible to get into the guts of.

Nevermind me. I am a moron. Perhaps checking the link before posting would be clever, no? I thought we were talking about Barebone-type PCs.

Those are fun too, but not fun to work on since components tend to be very Tetrised into the cases.

My wee PC is no monster, but it runs nice games like Skyrim and GW2 very nicely.  I have those wee silent fans and it just whispers along.  ^.^

I actually went for a quiet setup when I upgraded my PC this time around. Most of it is due to the chassis construction. The Antec P-180 is very silent, even with several fans in it.

Fluid bearing fans are a dream for quiet air setups.
