In competitive Magic it is pretty much assumed that you can afford to buy/borrow/etc whatever it is you want to play, and that's what I refer to as the barrier to entry. If you can't meet this requirement, then you might not be as flexible or as effective as you could be, but past that point money spent has no effect whatsoever.
True, it's not like you can pay $100 to automatically start the game with 1 land in play or whatever (what they'd call "customizing your experience" in many f2p mmo's).

As a Man U fan, I object to this being brought up! :)
Look out, a moderator with his ban-hammer unsheathed!

No no. That's just for spammers (already used it once today :) ) It was just a difficult end to the soccer (football) season. :)

Just say no to pay to win card games.
You know, statements like this has to be trolls. I get so infuriated by uninformed know-it-alls that just go "lol p2w" as soon as you have the option to buy anything in game.

Pay to win = You pay real life money to unlock a real advantage in game. An advantage that is most of the time ludicrously more powerful than anything free, simply to entice people to buy it. This advantage CANNOT be gotten for free by playing.

Free to play = Everything that affects game balance in anyway can be gotten for free, often through simply playing the game. Some games have ludicrously slow progression, but it's still all free. In game payment often involves "progression boosters" (such as XP boost or similar) or unlocking free things instantly instead over time.

Get your facts straight. Because this is really getting old. Free to play is NOT pay to win. In Shadow Era you can't even get anything exclusively with real life money. In Tribes Ascend, you can at least buy skins and voice packs for money only, Shadow Era has everything free over time.

Well, there is that one exclusive card from the physical card preorders hoopla, but its physical-only, no digital version.

Everything possible in the digital game (including the foil cards now) can obtained with enough time.

Personally I'm not a fan of free-to-play because it's not a model which agrees with my gaming/purchasing preferences - but I think that's just me.

So, has there been any actual talk about the game? As far as I can see the thread is a big MtG argument with some F2P/P2W arguing in the side, and the Bay12 thread tends to die a lot.

Me too, actually.  I don't mind paying money for an enjoyable game, but I want to know up front what it's going to cost me to "fully" enjoy what's been done.  If that's one price, fine.  If that's one price + another one for each expansion, fine, etc.  Even if it's a subscription, I can live with that (if it's good enough) because it's definite.  But when I gave DDO a try and saw the various "Turbine Point" packages and they had the nerve to recommend I go for the $200 one because it was the best deal (TP/$ ratio) ... I, uh, yea.  Not interested in dropping 200 dollars on that, and from what I could tell not even that would have covered all the content then present (leaving gameplay advantages completely out of the question).

So, has there been any actual talk about the game? As far as I can see the thread is a big MtG argument with some F2P/P2W arguing in the side.
Oh, there's a topic?  Oops :)

The game's OK; although in my experience the mage class is superior against the CPU. I lost quite a few games before I spent a bit of money to change tack and go mage - since then I've only ever lost to other mages.

I imagine PVP play is a different story mind you, but so far I've never been able to connect to a game.

Also, I can tell you it's not terribly well optimised for iPad. Not bad though.

I've lost ot plenty besides mages on occasion, though thats probably because my mage deck has no allies in it. Sometimes I get all my fireballs at once, sometime I don't get any, if I wanted to use allies I can use any other deck I have the cards for.

No, I'm irritating, at least if it still works. Try fighting Nisthaven when (if I was lucky and got Voice of Winter as soon as I have the resources for it) all your allies come out auto-frozen for two turns, they get frozen if they attack him (who is the only valid target) if I have Snow Sapphire on as well, and in the meantime, his ability (which doesn't hurt me since I have no allies to lose), fireballs, arcane bursts, lightning, and if in trouble, Supernova. Also the stalling one ally cards, and stuff to get more cards. And the DoT cards.

Boom! :D

Unfortunately, it is not hard to say "IT'S PAY TO WIN!!!!!!" when so many Free to Play games are structured that way. *looks at 99.99999999% of iOS games*. That said, I do wish people wouldn't just make blanket statements about games. Shadow Era really isn't that bad as far as FTP is concerned.

*facepalm when I realize I made a blanket statement*

If we're going to bring iOS games into the F2P mix...augh. THat turns the (somewhat) organizable clump of stuff (F2P on Steam, F2PMMO, F2P non-mmo or semi-mmo, etc) into a giant swimming pool of conflicting views.

Well Shadow Era is on iOS so...technically it was already in this discussion ;).
