Recent Cinema Movies
« on: October 04, 2011, 06:38:30 am »
It has been ages since I went to the cinema, not for a lack of desire to go there, but for a lack of movies to capture my interests.

So I am wondering, has there been any actually good movies latly? I might not have paied enough attention to catch the good ones and only had a streak of bad luck when going over the 'now playing' lists.

There's been a lot of good stuff in the last couple of years, but in the last year or so I've really not been able to catch much since having my son.  My wife and I have been out on a few date nights, though, and the most recent thing we saw was Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was something we were skeptical of but which turned out really well.  It's not my favorite movie ever or remotely close, but it was solid all the way through and the visual effects alone were pretty interesting.

Most recent thing I saw was Cowboys and Aliens. While it was not, by any stretch, a 'good' movie, it delivered exactly what it said on the tin. I went in expecting cowboys and aliens and perhaps some indians, along with a lot of explosions, and it delivered. I have also pretty well given up on anything good coming out though. I think the last movie that I thought qualified as really great was the final LotR movie.

...and it's 20 endings? Highly recommend Kevin Smith's views on that last film, or indeed the whole trilogy! - "There's only one return, and it ain't of the king, it's of the Jedi!"

There is a movie out right now called Warrior.  It's not based on a true story or anything, but it's extremely well done.  It will manipulate your emotions and keep you hooked until the end.

Thanks for the tips. I have considred going to see this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1614989/

Sometimes I hope to find something like 'Yojimbo' in the cinemas, but it sees to be a long time between each movie of that caliber. Of course, not all movies have to be such as that, sometimes just going to see cowboys and alins and explosions is quite OK :)

It followed the book fairly well, and since the book was an end of an epic tale with lots of characters, yes, it did have to spend a lot of time tying it all up. Perhaps it's not everyone's cup of tea, but for my money it's nice to see something done right instead of typical Hollywood junk where every story question gets tied up in a 2 minute scene and the credits roll.

While there may be a small, and I mean VERY small minority of people who disliked the LotR movies, I really don't think you can quibble with it's overwhelmingly positive success.  I don't care how many endings it had, those movies are the masterpiece of our time.
