Revelations 2012

Okay, sorry for linking to Google+ here, but it's a public post so you should be able to read it. For convenience, I'm copy&pasting the post as well.

Okay, I'm confused now. Read the comments here:

http://asia.gamespot.com/revelations-2012/user-reviews/793319/
Then watch the gameplay here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzTo6XUiIA4&feature=g-u-u
Now, the question that of course follows is: What were the people smoking when they made this game? Then of course, follows, WHAT THE HELL WERE THE REVIEWERS SMOKING?

The more I think about it, the more I think this game is an elaborate troll. Or, which could be the really sad truth, these devs actually think the game is awesome. They've already been caught posting positive comments on different gaming sites, posing as customers.

What kind of demented person do you have to be to believe this tripe is good? I spent some time watching videos, even the ones linked by the devs, and it's just atrocious.

Now, Arcen has taken a lot of flak for AVWW, particularly on the graphics side of things. I'm the first to admit that AVWW is in no way a perfect game, and there are many areas that can be improved. But it did "click". It's fun and enjoyable for the most part. This thing? My god, man. As a developer, you have to have the self-sense to see when your product brings nothing new to the table and when it is an obvious ripoff of another game.

Now, I know you guys at Arcen have to be "politically correct" in your responses on this forum in order to protect your company. However, do you have any comments at all on this? As for you other readers of this forum, what are your thoughts?

Personally, I think this borders on either insanity (they actually think it is good) or fraud (money grab).

Yeah, that was my initial reaction too. So I did some researching and my initial reaction was "oh lol, nice troll", then I found their website.

That game is literally Left 4 Dead. Like, it's not even a new game. It's just a bad mod. The menus, the 4 characters, the downed status and helping teammates back up, the bot AI, the floating tooltips, all of it... It is blatantly obvious that it's Left 4 Dead with a new coat of paint. A bad coat of paint. Someone fingerpainting while blindfolded and drunk. The enemies are obviously using the L4D zombie AI, except they only tend to come one or two at a time, which makes them stupidly easy to deal with since they're designed to be a challenge in hordes of 10-20. And it's like that with everything else they've changed. They swapped the first aid kits for tiny health pickups, but kept in the fact that you have to use them to pick them up, which is annoying if you have to do it every 5 seconds. They appear to have failed to copy the special infected (or at least the video didn't get that far) so you are just fighting generic enemies that run at you and die.

The game just has nothing to recommend it. Any fun you would get out of the gameplay would be vastly improved by just playing L4D. Unless you really get off on shooting Mayans (in which case, you should consider therapy) there is literally no reason to play it. I'm totally with TB on this one, I have no clue how Valve allows tripe like this on Steam and yet has famously denied some fantastic games that deserved to be on there long ago.

Hexen is flat out better, and came out in 1995.  I think even the graphics in Hexen are better.

Hexen is better than most things, or atleast I would pick playing Hexen and Hexen 2 over the majority of modern games

I haven't read any of that stuff and generally I avoid speaking negatively of other developers (not that it isn't sometimes deserved, but someone else can do it for me), but I have seen the game in question on steam and it doesn't surprise me that it's... well, ". . .".

Perhaps they intended it to be the fulfillment of the prophecy in question?

What I'm wound up about is the fact that this tripe is featured on Steam at a rather prime price, it's devs are trawling around forums and reviews everywhere acting like customers and giving it flashing scores, and they act like their game and their company is Jesus or something. That's what I'm wound up about.

Sounds like they need some lessons on customer service from Saxton Hale.

I'm not defending the game or anything, but is 9.99 a prime price?

For this piece of unpolished turd? Yes.

EDIT: The heck, half my post went missing! O_o

No, 9.99 isn't a prime price. In this case, it was just a matter of blindness. For some reason, I read 19.99. Not that it's a prime price either, but it's definitely worse.

To be fair, 9.99 isn't a prime price for a game. It just happens that this game sucks soooo soooooo sooooooooooooo bad. Hehe

Well, in terms of the graphics for the game, I think that TB was giving them a harder time than they deserved.  Yes -- they are bad.  But I think people have a foggy memory if they think that looks like Bryce or Quake I.  It doesn't even look like Half Life 1.  It doesn't look remotely on par with even the original Half Life 2, I'll definitely agree -- but there's a bit of hyperbole.  And as for things that "look like they were made in Poser," I'm not sure why that's a popular insult these days.  Are people talking about Poser 4?  Do they know that this is what Poser can do now?

Also: complaints about the partner AI seemed unfounded to me.  They seemed perfectly competent and in line with a lot of recent games.  They were firing at enemies (TOO well) and not getting stuck on geometry or anything else.  The balance was off since the player wasn't taking any damage, but perhaps they had a difficulty level setting that was hidden somewhere.  In general I didn't see anything wrong with the ally AI, anyhow.

Not that I'm defending the game.  Anybody who poses as a customer and posts positive reviews of their own stuff is not someone I consider a colleague, if that's what they're really doing.  I only have it third-hand so I hope that the reports of that are mistaken.

Beyond that, I'm out of nice or neutral things to say.  So... ". . ."
