There are plenty of non-serious FPS games being made that aren't COD like. Shadow Warrior, Serious Sam 3, Painkiller Hell and Damnation (even if it is a fairly meh remake of the original), Rise of the Triad Remake (even if I don't like it much), etc and so forth. That style of gameplay is far from dead. There's a Serious Sam 4 in the works too last I heard. The audience is out there and so are the games. Just gotta dig a little bit beyond the surface level.

By the way, Descent Underground made its Kickstarter goal. Congrats to those lucky guys.

No... with the way games are often made today and how things like those often get screwed up by "modernizing" them, I sorta instantly figured "well, those'll be bad, nothing like the old games they're based on" and ignored them.  My natural negativity just contributed towards it.

......does that mean they ARENT bad?  This fact would surprise me.
Well, I can't say based on what YOUR tastes are, but Shadow Warrior has me and one of my girlfriend's squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-ing with glee. Both due to the meaty and impactful melee gameplay, but also the really clever (albeit seriously cheezy and 80's action movie-style) writing.

Serious Sam is just...well, old school "throw five hundred enemies at the player in a giant arenas and see if the ammo lasts". It's basic. It's just gory, explodey, massive shooting. There is nothing intelligent, realistic or serious about it. It's just dumb fun.

Will you like it? I have no idea. I just know those games rekindled my love for the FPS genre.

Ah, Serious Sam 3 sounds about right, then... I've never been too fond of storylines in games (I find most of them to be bad, and typically if I want a story, I'll just go read a book anyway; damn things are littered all over my room) and I have negative patience when it comes to action games.  If one makes me wait too long, I might do something like attack the nearest wall in hopes of breaking through to where something is actually happening.  As stories go, the ones I dont mind tend to be something in the style of a typical shmup storyline, like "Here is a ship!  Blast off and strike at the heart of the evil Bydo empire!" and then there's a zillion bullets and... more bullets.

And a million internets will be awarded to anyone that actually knows what the Bydo are.  I miss that series.  Even though I dont normally get into "traditional" shmups quite as much.
