Rebel Galaxy

So we talked a bit about Rebel Galaxy over here, and not it is out on steam.

I only had a chance to play 15 minutes or so, and it looks quiet similar to Freelancer, which is a good sign. The fiddly bits (that is ship control and combat) is very different though and I'm not sure if I like them yet. They are made to be ported to console, that's for sure. The combat itself is boardside, which is unlike freelancer. That is there were a freighter in freelancer that you could defend only with boardside cannons, but because of that it was pretty much undefendable. In this game this being the main option (there is also a front turret I understand but must be less powerful?) it obviously should work, but the combat then is very different to dogfights I accustomed to in freelancer.

Now I stopped playing when (I had to go) and my ship stuck in space debris. This was really bad, I tried for a few minutes to get unstuck, but given that you do not have reverse thrusters (or I did not find them) it was impossible. I just had to quit. If there is not clever way of dealing with a situation like that I'd classify it as a bug.

What about you guys, did you try it? Did you like it? I'm definitely going to have another go at it when I get a chance.

Its on my radar to pick up on GOG later this year. But I don't have any other thoughts on it.

It's just another game that uses pseudo-space as a backdrop, but comes with lots of flashy effects and absolutely no space things whatsoever.
0/10, not even remotely interested.

The trailer's music was pretty good though.

From look at a let's play the combat seems really grindy later on..

Scott Manley did a video on it.. (one of his, imo, worst videos ever made at that) so maybe that is just not indicative of the game as it is right now.. who knows.  Liked the music, but not much else (again, only watched bit of gameplay on Twitch aside from that first look video)

I had a good amount of fun with it as a light combat thing in a somewhat simulated but mostly detached universe. If you demand that, as a space game, it behave like every space game you've ever played, you're going to be disappointed. It plays more like Escape Velocity.

Once I got tired of the battles (and the constant clicking and holding down mouse buttons and clicking and waving the mouse around), the appeal faded pretty quickly.

Then GOG put the X series on sale and now I have a new thing to play with.

I kinda forgot I owned it. Take that for what it's worth.
