Question about desura
« on: December 18, 2012, 12:29:29 am »
Guys, is desura more like steam (games generally do not work without steam installed and to play offline you need to be in special offline mode) or more like Gog (games are completely stand alone and the app is more for downloading rather than DRM purposes)?

More like GoG with a (Horrible) client.

What Echo said. The client is clunky as crap, but most (I'm not sure about all) games can be separately downloaded DRM free.

So I don't need desura to play a game bought on desura, once this game is downloaded?

If you download it VIA the client, I think you need the client to launch it, I'm not sure. I don't use Desura anymore because the client is so terrible. I only have an account so I can download Xenonauts and Zomboid whenever they release a new version.

Fox, you don't need the client to download Xenonauts, though. (nor do you have to go through the launcher to play them). All of the dowlowd links are here, you just have to wait for desura to update its downloads before you can download.

I only have a few games on Desura, but none of them require the client to be open, just to install or update if it doesn't have an in game updater.

Okay, thanks was going to get Gnomoria, but was debating whether to buy direct or via desura (which I never used before) direct seems like way to go then.

I only made a Desura account because I had to (Only way to buy Xenonauts, though you can DL the game from the devs after you've bought it) but I've used it to manage some mods as well, since it auto updates those too.

Yep, I know. But I had to buy the game via Desura to have access to those links ;) But I know I don't have to use the actual client anymore, which I don't.
