I have never heard of Planescape: Torment.

Dear god... :o  You are making me choke on my Fritos.

The guy who wrote that is writing this game. If you like RPGs, and if you haven't played that game- totally not kidding- It will change you. gog.com is having a sale this weekend on it. Do yourself a favor and get that game. Load up the mods for the widescreen resolution and a couple quest fixes (It's in the forum). Turn out the lights and have your mind blown.

I burst out laughing when I read this. Good thing my water was on the desk at the time.

See earlier response about me being completely broke ;). I'm serious too, sadly, can't buy anything besides essentials for the past several months. I'm sure it'll be on sale another time.

I must not like RPGs much then, because I grew bored of this game in less than two hours. About as long as I lasted in Baldur's Gate. NWN didn't even get me that far :/

Yea, if Baldur's Gate doesn't interest you then fair enough, the whole CRPG/WRPG genre is probably not for you :)

NWN was a step down from the days of Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment, though it was alright in its own way.

And a certain person gifted this game to me. Clearly, this guy is so evil he doesn't care if I have free time left ever again. ;) Thank you very much. I emailed you back, but I have no idea if that's your actual email address, though it seemed legit.

You'll be needing this. Here is a video I made of how it looks after you load it up for the first time with the mods.

And whomever sent it to him, what a great gift.  good on you.

Oh, one more thing, this is not going to be Diablo in the slightest. The way you navigate the story is very important. Wisdom is very important. Make sure you choose your dialogue carefully. It's much closer to a pen and paper RPG than action RPG.

Yikes, and I thought I had to install a bunch of mods for Shadow of Chernobyl. Thanks for the info though, appreciated.

This is very cool, I'm a little disappointed they didn't mention a mac version though. I'll have to ask them about that, maybe as a stretch goal.

The big thing with obsidian is while they have top-notch writing and plots (I saw they had the lead programmer from Planescape, but what about the lead writer/creative guy - anybody know?), their games tend to be on the buggy side. Though perhaps that could be blamed on the publisher pushing the games out earlier without enough QA.

On a somewhat related note, has anybody tried the updated Baldur's Gate game? I'm curious what was done in the new game beyond a few extra quests/characters.

Are you talking about the lead designer?

He is in as creative director. So, yes.

And the updated Baldur's gate has been delayed until November.

I have never played or heard of Planescape either.
...so is the story really the best part of it? Like, what does the story compare to?

Very good news for the kickstarter project, but sad news about the updated Baldur's Gate. For some reason I thought it came out last week or so.

And the Planescape plot is amazing, but to be honest I do not think I could go back and play that (or baldur's gate) as while the story was great - it was a very dated game that lacks a lot of the nice little things of today. It's like fighting against the game to enjoy it. Though if you can get over the slow pace, inventory management, they're all very nice games.

I thought Baldur's gate was okay - but Baldur's gate 2 was really amazing. Planescape has fantastic writing and very in-depth dialogue which can solve most of the quests through. They're all on the same engine, which as I said did not age gracefully - but if you can get over that they're fantastic games.

Edit: It is possible there are some mods that help with the engine's age, I've never really checked though. One to speed up walking speed/combat would be pretty essential, you can always pause to issue commands.

I doubt it'll reach 14 million, but it'll definitely hit the goal within a 24 hours of it getting up. Already at nearly a million.

I feel compelled to point out that it says it's "trending" towards that number and specifically that "Trends are not projections" :)

On the other hand, if you look at the day-1 "trending" point for the Planetary Annihilation project: http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/659943965/planetary-annihilation-a-next-generation-rts/#chart-exp-trend , it's eerily close to the actual result, considering how much things varied in the middle.  Like, too close for it to have actually been a result of accuracy.

The mechanic of the game is really navigating the story and how you choose to do that. Yes there is combat, magic, and ass-kickery, but these are sometimes optional! Some of the quests involve violence, but quite often the mechanic of this game is really understanding the story and navigating it with the dialogue options. You can avoid attacking completely.
