Planetside 2
« on: September 13, 2012, 01:26:13 pm »
The one and only MMOFPS, currently in closed beta. Planned for release later this year. It will be F2P and available both on and off of Steam.

I recently got into the beta (last week to be exact). Man am I loving it.

Anyone else in the Beta?

Nope, but I've been following TotalBiscuit and he's been covering it a lot. It's intriguing, but the whole persistant, online experience is of limited interest to me. Mostly because I already have Tribes which is taking up that time from me at the moment. Once I bore with Tribes (which is already starting to happen a bit), PS2 might catch my interest. On the other hand, Natural Selection 2 is way more intriguing as far as online FPSs go.

PS2 has completely pulled me away from Tribes for one big reason: Vehicles.

The thing I loved most about Tribes 2, and the thing I did every game, was play with vehicles. I was always in a bomber or a tank or an anti-vehicular heavy or dropping a half-squad of heavies on the enemy base with a Havok. I just didn't do anything else.

T:A didn't scratch that itch for me. The Vehicles aren't a factor. The Shrike is the only useful vehicle in the game really. The bomber and Havok are non-existant, and the tank useless. Plus, games are too small. 16v16? I use to play on a 40v40 Tribes 2 server.

Planetside 2 has everything I miss in T:A.

Funny, I never use vehicles in Tribes because I find the man to man combat so interesting :P At the same time I feel full 16v16 games are a touch chaotic. I'd rather see 12v12 or something. I think it's mostly down to mapsize though.

Been in the Beta since PAX. I was going to make a thread here but decided not to, but it's a really good game if you can get some actual organized battles. Even random Zerging is pretty fun, but when you have an outfit or squad together it is even more so.

I personally love the logistics focus, piloting a Galaxy or Sunderer is really satisfying because you feel like you're really helping your team. Of course, it's in closed beta so there aren't a lot of people playing, so less people will tend to get in your transport unless you have a pre-arranged squad, but when you do it's a great feeling.

This video gives you a good idea of what squad combat is like. And even that is just a smaller engagement with minimal vehicle support, in larger battles you'd see dropships ferrying troops in, bombers overhead dropping bombs, Sunderers moving in and acting as advance spawn stations and more.

Honestly this is one of my favorite games of late.

But of course, beta is beta so there are a lot of bugs. Instant action tends to drop you in random locations (once it even put me right by the enemy spawn point, it took a while to get back.) and there's a particurlarly annoying "Fall through the floor" bug when you spawn, but it's being improved.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Both those problems have been fixed as of the latest update actually.

So the second continent has been released, Esamir. It looks pretty cool, (no pun intended) but I have yet to visit it. Also, with everyone being forced onto two servers, there are a lot more people in a given area now. There are some benefits to this, but also downsides such as more teamkillers and griefers.

This game is probably the most awkward thing I've had appear in my email in awhile. Mostly because, as neat as its seemed, and as happy as I am for it doing so, I feel like my laptop isn't going to be able to run it very well and I know a heck of a lot of people are still waiting probably, and with probably far better graphic cards than I.

Teamkillers? An MMO FPS has friendly fire?... wow... did they never play BF3 on a 64 player hardcore server in say, rush or team-dm? I must be the only one who thinks this to be an incredibly bad idea... even without intention how is a tank driver going to prevent racking up half a dozen team kills per shot in tight engagements?

You do get reduced team damage. I've gotten teamkilled (unintentionally) maybe 4 times and that's only when there were a ton of people all firing down one corridor. Tanks and bombers get less teamkills than you'd think.

Regarding the hardware: It's not optimized very well yet, but my computer is average and gets an average framerate in all but the largest battles.

If they have teamkilling I hope they have an achievement named "With Friends Like This, Who Needs Enemies?"

Bob's in the tank, everyone down!

I am a dedicated tank driver and I have never gotten a single teamkill firing my gun.

I have however gotten dozens and dozens of teamkills when people walk in front of my moving tank. What part of look both ways before crossing the street do people not understand?

They are lacking in streets. Thus they forget that ye of the tankery is, well, dangerous and that Friendly Flattening is still on. ;)

That should imo give you points then ;p People running in front of driving tanks are a danger to themselves, and to the pristine paint of your tank! Flattening them is fair play ;p

So I take the tank battles in Planetside 2 are not as realistic as in BF3... tank shells can easily wipe out anything next to whatever you shoot at. Or are there so many vehicles around? How is it even assigned who drives a vehicle and who doesn't?
