Computer-assisted Card/Board games
« on: January 02, 2012, 04:51:16 am »
Hello all,

recently I've been interested in what is available in terms of simulating card and board games on PC. Since the information is dispersed in internet, I thought, that I'd right the results of my findings here for future reference. If anyone has anything to add, even remotely related, please don't be shy.

Card Games
========
http://www.lackeyccg.com/ - This is I think is the most mature card game engine out there has plugins for about 50 card game

http://www.octgn.net/ - the version two of this project that was a complete rewrite of version one started just a few years ago, I was quite sceptical about this one at first, as I was not sure that it'd get enough traction, but it seems that this project has successfully taken off. The game sets for this can be found here:
https://sites.google.com/site/octgnsets - (it says that the side has moved, but the sets pages seems to be still maintained nonetheless at the moment of wring)
http://octgn.gamersjudgement.com/ - the forums with games/sets

http://www.magicworkstation.com/ - This as a paid program (unlike most others) and it's been very good when it was created and maintained. It's still being sold but there was no new versions since 2005. There are modules for a few games available if you search the internet, such as World of Warcraft TCG and NetRunner.
http://virtualplaytable.com/ - This is a recent one that is linked from the Magic Workstation (the previous one) web site. This is also free. It seems that currently the only module available for this is Magic The Gathering.

http://gccg.sourceforge.net/ - Supports Magic The Gathering, Pokemon, Lord of The Rings and Middle Earth: the Wizards. May be a few more but you have to hunt for modules.

http://www.kardfy.com/ - It looked promising when it started, but it kind of slowed down since then, and it seems that only one game is supported - the one that developers of the program invented.

Board Games
=========
http://www.vassalengine.org - this one seems to be the leader. It's java, means multi-platform, and it has zillion of modules. However the look and feel of this is very... erm... clunky. The functionality is all there but it does not look nice.

http://cyberboard.brainiac.com/index.html - this is mostly for PBEM, the modules a bit hard to find, but there are quite a few (big selection) of them

http://www.zuntzu.com/ - Another one that seems decent

http://www.battlegroundsgames.com/ -  this seems to be a recent one that tries to be nice and user friendly

http://acts.warhorsesim.com/ - PBEM online server. Supports about 20 different games.

http://www.hpssims.com/Pages/products/adc2/ADC2-Main.html - This one I think is a dead one now. It's not free and it is no longer developed / updated. Has a decent number of games though.

====

This (dated) post tries to compare some of the above: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/283795/can-someon-compare-and-contrast-vassal-cyberboard?

Very nice links selection on topic can be found here http://www.battlegroundsgames.com/links.html

Completely Unrelated =)))
==================

While I was on the hunt for the software above I came across the following things that captured my attention:

http://www.netrunneronline.com - very old TCG that is described on wikipedia as "one of The Millennium's Most Underrated Games". It's out of print for many years now, but seems to have a steady fan base and online play.

http://www.gamesiplay.com - this is kind of a weird site, it supports online play for Magic The Gathering and World of Warcraft TCG, but I was not able to find if there are any other games supported by it. There is a huge list of games on the site, but these seem to be names only and there is no pay facility provided for them.
