I'm not talking in absolutes. I didn't say it was impossible for a tablet to have a decent game, but you haven't shown me any games that are compelling reasons to get one. I usually crave intellectually demanding games, not twitch titles. Again, this doesn't mean that the tablet sucks for everybody, or that I think your decision to get a tablet is dumb. I am merely making the observation that rubbing my hands on a screen for Apple appcrap or shovelware doesn't appeal to me. And I don't think we are far apart on the Nintendo Wii platform. That platform was horrible.

I must reiterate, I'm sure you have found some great games, and I am happy for you. My observations about mobile gaming are purely my own, and yes I have a negative opinion because I do think the games suck, and the platform sucks from a technical and user interface perspective.

I think it just comes down to, we have different tastes.

Yeah, pretty much.  Like I said, I didn't expect my own lists to agree with anyone here.  My idea of an "intellectually demanding game" is only puzzle games, roguelikes and strategy games, turn-based only.  That's as far as it extends.  Though I'm pretty picky about them.  Other than that I'm a complete twitch gamer with a hatred for consoles/handhelds.  Well, the current and previous generations, anyway. Ditched all of those. Older consoles going all the way back to the 2600 era, those are good.

I'm AWARE of plenty of games of the sort that I believe you're thinking of, but I never bought into any of them, so I cannot put them on that list.  Only things I personally have experienced.

As for the interface, purely subjective.  Well, as inputs go.  Touchscreens just dont get along with some.   What I'd like them to do is expand alternate control options beyond just arcade sticks. There's keyboards that work for these, but those are meant for typing;  games dont really support those, which is a shame.  Just sticks and controllers.  I personally dont use such things much, but it'd alleviate the problems for many users.   Overall though I prefer the touchscreen over anything that isnt a PS3 controller or.... a PS3 controller.  More accuracy and whatnot.  The less said about the 360 controller or the abomination that is the Wii's controller, the better.

As for UI.... that's a bit of a different story.   iOS, the main screens, those are fine.  Perfectly fine.  But the app store... or the mail program... or things like that... ugh.  I'm pretty sure they were programmed and designed by sitting a very drunken and blindfolded monkey in front of a keyboard and having him bash it with his face until an appropriate program popped out.  I'd just love for a different option for those.   There's different browsers at least, but.... feh.   The browser isnt the important part.

And yes, the Wii was bloody horrid.  I didn't like the PS3 or 360 either, but the Wii..... my absolute loathing for Nintendo aside, well, even if I didn't hate them, I'd still hate that thing.  Feh.  Leave it to Nintendo to decide that the important part of everything is gimmicks.   They've been doing that since the NES era.

And the REALLY sad thing is that the ancient Power Glove does the same thing as the Wii remote.... but more accurately.   Granted, it has that horrible assemblage that needs to be strapped to a TV, and there was only one real game for it, but.... yeah, it was better.  And I did really like that particular game.  Currently the thing is buried in a giant cordball though.

At least some hilarity came out of the damn Wiimote though, when Sony and Microsoft decided "It'll print money for us too if we copy it!"  That led to much of the funny.   Ah, corporate logic.  I hope it never changes.

No idea if anyone cares, but Monster Hunter Freedom Unite has just released onto iOS... no idea about Android.  THe full game, naturally.  Compatible with all of the controllers that have been popping up for these devices recently.  Not arcade sticks though obviously.

Normally I dont announce things in a specific form like this, but Monster Hunter is one of the very rare exceptions.

Particularly when it's NOT on a Nintendo console.  Finally, after all these years....

Hello all,

I know that the best mobile game platform now is iOS. There is a lot of good games available (although this is quite a different beast from desktop or console gaming). Android somewhat lags behind, or so I heard. And what about Windows? Non existent?

The reason I ask that we've been given a good discount on Toshiba Encore 8 and I'm tempted to buy one, but I'm worried that there will be little to nothing for the kids to play on it. What do you think? I have an iPad and it quite satisfies my personal mobile gaming needs (not that it could not be better or anything).

I'm going a bit off-topic. But just want to say I think android platform works awesome for all mobile games depending on the device you are using.
