Let me put it this way.

On launch day the game would not run for 25% of players.  When reported it turned out that it did not run on one of the dev's secondary computers (was fine on his primary).  You'd think that he'd have tested every machine he had at hand.

Took about a week to put out a patch.  The game still did not run for me.

I attempted to get Valve to remove the game from my games list (didn't even care about a refund), didn't happen.

Some time later I attempted to play the game solo just to see how it was.

It is not a solo-capable game.  In fact, I'm not even sure the number of enemies or their difficulty scales with the number of players.

I got more kills with a jeep than I did with any of my guns, as using guns I was slow, did less damage, had to reload, could be approached from behind, etc. etc.

But I still lost the mission (and not because I died!) because I was incapable of activating the McGuffin and killing dinos at the same time.

1/10 would not recommend.

After probably over 10 gigs of patches later, it's simply an alright game.

Being able to kill dinosaurs will cool guns is certainly entertaining, and if it had launched in its current state, the game probably would have received closer to a 70-80% on Metacritic, but that's not saying much because Metacritic reviewers are infinitely too easy on their games in my opinion.

Unfortunately, even with all the patching and updates, and I absolutely applaud the developers for sticking with the atrocity long after everybody gave up on it, it still has some major problems. The pacing is extremely slow. Prepare to use a pistol and a small weapon for a long time, even on the easiest difficulty, because you gain money so slowly you have to wait so many rounds to get the really cool stuff that it's insane. The rounds get really repetitive. There isn't much variation between the dinosaurs, they all basically do the same thing which is 'attack'. Sure some of them have different abilities but in the end it doesn't seem to matter much. Fighting some of the really big dinosaurs (like T-Rex and Triceratops) can be really cool, but you see them so rarely, and it's so easy to basically glitch them to death, that it takes most of the enjoyment out of it for me. My typical tactic for playing the game is playing the Assault class, buying a light rifle after a couple rounds, then flying with my jetpack up to a spot on a cliff and killing dinosaurs by the hundreds with impunity. There are really very few mechanics in the game preventing you from "cheesing" it like this.

They've recently added some really cool weapons, but once again, you gain money so slowly that even though I started playing again just to try them, I gave up. I shouldn't have to play 3-4 hours just to test out a new weapon for heaven's sake.

Basically, if you like this kind of game (wave-based survival against a much stronger and more numerous opponent), buy Killing Floor. You'll have infinitely more fun.

I second this, and I don't even like Killing Floor.

metacritic
No one should read metacritic reviews. They're all bullshit and paid to say positive things about the games. Some reviewers like TotalBiscuit, Angry Joe, Worth a Buy and some others are good if you want different view points and opinions but you should always think for yourself. Look for gameplay videos on YouTube and play demos etc. And by gameplay I mean actual GAME PLAY...... I know there are "gameplay trailers" that do not actually show GAME PLAY.. they show cinematics or random crap from strange camera angles that don't exist in the game. So trailers don't tell anything either. Also most of the "screenshots" (not actual screenshots) are bullcrap.

Ugh, watching hour-long videos by "internet personalities." I'm not talking about someone like Moonshine Fox, who sounds like an actual person, but I can't get past the video thumbnail of an Angry Joe video. Decent written reviews can be hard to come by, though, so I guess YouTube is a more honest place. I will often look up some gameplay footage on YouTube if a game isn't well explained by a web site or a review, but almost invariably the game turns out to not be very good.

Prim3's on the right track, though: ask a forum that you're familiar with.

I agree, you really do have to think for yourself but it is nice to have opinions from people who can share actual experiences, i'm actually taking my chances and am installing the game myself. Who knows, maybe in some strange way i personally mite like it ^^

Orion: dino horde is great for those cold winter days when you need to light a wood stove with your computer.

Me and some friends got it during a steam sale for a dollar I believe.

Its a great game for when your bored with a bunch of people on skype. Single player, its pretty meh.

For the $14.99 price it currently is at on steam, I would not recommend it. If it goes on sale for dirt cheap again, then I would if you have people to play it with.
