While a couple of years old, this game deserves to be highlighted since apparently there is no thread for it.

It well umm...I'm hesitant to call it a "freebee" because it's an AAA-quality game that rivals anything you could pay money for.  Lasers!  Explosions!  Also a huge amount of voice acting, some of which is done by actual professionals.  The 8GB file size is justified.

With the current crop of space games still mostly in development, I'm sure some of you are trying to find something.  Here you go.

I bought the whole saga (I'm insane) on GOG during the last salepalooza. I haven't gotten to it yet but I am curious what the fuss is about.

Wrong.  You are thinking of the official games.  Wing Commander Saga is a megaproject fangame.

That sounds like a bad legal bait to happen but yes, that is definitely NOT what I was thinking about .

If any legal action were to be taken, it would of happened by now.  Incidentally this isn't the only fangame, just the biggest one by far.

What the devs can't do is accept money for it.

You know, I wish I could agree with that sentiment. But some recent fan projects for Nintendo-related series were recently shut down after existing for years. Hopefully, that's just an anomaly but never say never. Ultimately, the companies with the copyright have the final say.
